Fibromyalgia: The condition is invisible, it's impacts are not.
To  David Cameron The Prime Minister, Mark Harper, Minister for State for Disabled People. Jeremy Hunt, Secretary of State for Health.

We need the government and the health department to recognise this illness for what it is, a debilitating life-changing illness for which there is no known cure. Every day, people who suffer from fibromyalgia endure chronic, widespread pain plus up to 200 other symptoms.  We need more funding for bio medical research into Fibromyalgia.

From  Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

MicroRNAs are kind of a new "thing" for researchers, which means everyone's looking at them. Last week, we talked about new discoveries in fibromyalgia, and this week, we look at whether they could be a biomarker for ME/CFS. That's below.
Also this week, a look at some of our many bizarre symptoms and the things that trigger them, both up top and down in Featured Articles. You might be surprised that you're not the only one with some of these!
Some seasonal content is over on the right.
Take care of yourself!

Controversial Report Provides Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advocates Powerful Weapon For Change
“Because of limitations in the evidence base, we did not have high confidence in any of the findings from this review.”

The reports from ME/CFS advocates are in. The AHRQ report is “appallingly bad”, “scientifically indefensible and irresponsible”, and is “fundamentally and irredeemably flawed”. It contains “multitudes of mistakes,” has “serious and sometimes insurmountable flaws”. In short, it’s a dangerous document put together by a bunch of numbskulls – a document that every responsible ME/CFS patient should do their best to see gutted.
I see it differently. I believe it’s the single most effective tool for change that advocates have been handed in decades.

AHRQ Report – Excluding Progress? The Exclusionary factors and Missing Studies

My assumption has been that the AHRQ knows what it’s doing and is doing its job well. That assumption is based on the fact that the AHRQ appears to be thriving as an institution.
The AHRQ notes in its report, however, that “divergent and conflicted opinions are common” even among experts in these reports.
I have been told that at least one very divergent opinion has been privately expressed by a respected ME/CFS expert who was consulted for this report and whose suggestions were not taken.  I contacted another ME/CFS researcher who felt that overly strict inclusion criteria prevented the inclusion of many potential biomarkers.

Low Dose Naltrexone Report: Engineering LDN Effectiveness, Free App and the Conference

Engineering Better Health With Low Dose Naltrexone
One Size Fits All Approach Fading
“ We envision that the concepts presented in this paper will lead to novel individualized treatments where treatment dosages can be assigned by a mobile device at the disposal of the participant.”

Dr. Jarred Younger’s earlier work on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that matched daily symptom and cytokine levels suggested, for the first time that leptin levels were playing a major role in ME/CFS.  The kind of intensive analysis of daily shifts in symptoms and health had never been done before in ME/CFS, but it could be what future medicine looks like.
Future medicine will more and more rely on a personalized approach to treatment
In a recent paper focusing on Low Dose Naltrexone and Fibromyalgia, Sunil Deshpande PhD, Younger and colleagues argue that this kind of intensive, individualized approach should guide not just a doctors decision regarding treatments, but a patients decision how to administer them. If it takes off it could revolutionarize how disorders are treated.

Small Fiber Neuropathy Fibromyalgia Study Raises Questions

Several studies have found that a subset of fibromyalgia patients have small fiber neuropathy, however, a recent study of small fiber neuropathy in fibromyalgia patients raises more questions than it answers.

TENS therapy: An option for fibromyalgia treatment?
Would a TENS unit help improve fibromyalgia pain?

Possibly. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) is a therapy sometimes used to treat localized or regional pain.
During TENS therapy, electrodes deliver electrical impulses to nearby nerve pathways — which can help control or relieve some types of pain. TENS is often used to treat osteoarthritis and chronic and postoperative pain.
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread pain in the muscles, ligaments and tendons, as well as fatigue and multiple tender points — places on the body where slight pressure causes pain. The pain of fibromyalgia isn't limited to a specific area, so TENS therapy isn't generally used as a treatment. However, some new research has shown that TENS may be effective for reducing pain in people who have fibromyalgia, especially in combination with other treatments, such as exercise.

The Role of Stress in Chronic Pain Management

I’m writing this for those of you who are living with chronic pain and want to be more successful with not only managing your pain, but ending your suffering as well. I believe that freedom from suffering is your right—but it’s also your responsibility. It’s so important that you learn as much as possible about your pain and what constitutes effective chronic pain management. Since stress management is one of the most fundamental interventions for effective chronic pain management,it’s vital that you learn what the stressors are in your life and how to effectively address them.

A personal note from Vicky
A bit scary!

We’ve had a bit of fun this past week with my Halloween warm up!  I devised this when I was on a course and we were challenged to produce a warm up with a difference - my group won!!

     Double, double toil and trouble;
     Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

As I think you know that I have over the years developed good working relationships with local osteopaths, chiropractors and therapists in the town. Whilst all of us help people using our skills, sometimes we refer to each other as our approaches are different but compliment each other.  I have been grateful to many of the osteopaths in the town for taking an interest in what I’m doing and  helping me build on my knowledge.  I was given an hours tutorial this week at the clinic I attend. My teaching has come such a long way over the past 10 years and a lot of that is due to the interest these professionals have taken in what I’m doing.

More Forced Onto PIP, Pre-Payment Benefits Cards, Pay To Appeal

If you are wondering what might happen to claimants after the next election, then we can offer a few clues in this newsletter.
For example, we can reveal that the Ministry of Justice has done so much work on charging benefits claimants to go to a tribunal that they are refusing to send us the information - because it would cost too much to collect and collate it all.
Then there’s the news that a Labour council have had to abandon a scheme for giving claimants a pre-payment card instead of cash, because only two people volunteered. It was Labour who introduced compulsory prepayment cards for failed asylum seekers and it was IDS who announced at the Conservative party conference in September that they will now be tested on claimants who are  parents and have “drug or alcohol addiction, even problem debt, or more”.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
