FMS eNews 18/10/14

Our Cromer visit is over and we are home again.  The sea view from our window included the pier which was great.  Monday brought a month's rainfall which was devastating, but the other days were OK for the time of year. We did manage a walk on the pier!  We saw our friends each day and did a lot of catching up and visited both of their flats. The hotel was good and our window can be seen on last week's photo at the top left with the white surround!!

Dr. Craig on a Nutritional Approach to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
In the third of our blog series on using  supplements to treat Chronic  Fatigue Syndrome and/or Fibromyalgia, Dr. CourtneyCraig talks about testing and her approach

An Interview with Dr. Courtney Craig
You noted that you’d spent thousands of dollars on supplements before you found the approach that worked for you. How long did it take you to do that?

I first sought an integrative medicine doctor when I was 18 years old and was given high dose B-vitamins. Before that, I never considered supplementation as a viable option for symptom management because I didn’t have a clue about the illness.
Over the course of the next 7 years I tried various supplements in a rather shotgun fashion that never made the slightest dent in my fatigue. This was long before I understood the importance of supplement quality and dosing. It wasn’t until I started with a doctor who used pharmaceutical-grade supplements, under the auspices of Dr. Teitelbaum’s protocol that I started to notice differences.

“End ME/CFS” Mega Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Project Begins
Now this is exciting.

The Open Medicine Foundation (OMF) has announced it has created and is raising funds for a huge “End ME/CFS” project.  They’re looking for five million dollars a year to  fund it — about double the NIH’s current annual spending on all ME/CFS research. That’s a really ambitious project.  Could they actually pull it off?
“What is needed is a total attack on the problem.” – Ron Davis PhD
I think they could, and the reason why starts with Ron Davis PhD, the originator and leader of the project. Davis has been thinking about producing a high-level consortium to attack Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) for years. The idea of a consortium immediately came up when I first talked to him about three years ago.  His son, Whitney, had introduced us. Whitney was quite ill then, but since then has gotten much worse.  He now has one of the worst cases of ME/CFS I’ve heard of.
In order to understand where this project is coming from and why it might work let’s take a look at the man behind it.

How To Fight Fibro Symptoms Naturally With Acetyl-L-Carnitine
Continuing the components of Fibrolief.

Among the many possible culprits that researchers hypothesize may cause fibromyalgia is mitochondrial dysfunction. This dysfunction impairs the ability of mitochondria (which are found in nearly every cell in the body) to convert energy into ATP, which provides energy for every cell in the body. This irregularity is commonly (though not always) found in patients suffering from fibromyalgia.
One of the critical substances produced by the body to help mitochondria is Acetyl-L-Carnitine. This amino acid one of several forms of carnitines at work in your body.   It helps carry fatty foods to the mitochondria to be used as fuel and also carries away the toxic waste from the fueling process. In this sense, it helps provide energy for the body and acts as an antioxidant to destroy harmful free radicals in the body.
Now that you’re familiar with Acetyl-L-Carnitine and its functions, lets explore three ways in which it has been shown to help reduce the symptoms of Fibromyalgia:

 1.  Improves Endurance & Reduces Fatigue
 2.  Reduces Pain
 3.  Improves Mental Health

With Fibromyalgia Treatment, One Size Does Not Fit All

Paris—The bulk of evidence to date suggests that treatment of fibromyalgia should be individualized and graduated, with nonpharmacologic approaches preferred to drugs—especially aerobic exercise, according to a fibromyalgia expert.
“There is no magic drug against fibromyalgia, and in my opinion there will never be,” said Winfried Häuser, MD, a clinical researcher at Technische Universitat Munchen, Germany, during his presentation at the European League Against Rheumatism (EULAR) 2014 Congress (abstract SP0061).
Aerobic exercise is the most effective intervention for alleviating fibromyalgia symptoms, Dr. Häuser said. Psychotherapy can help some patients, but physicians should not expect miracles, he said.

A personal  note from Vicky
Party Time!
I hate to say this but Christmas is coming. So it’s party time! I have decided to shut the classes down from Wednesday 17th December (and I’ll adjust your payments).  I know people get wrapped up with Christmas events and attendance drops.  I have booked Pizza Express for 7.30pm on Thursday 18th December (not the 15th as originally suggested in class).  They looked after us very well last year and people have said they would like to go there again.  The three Course menu is £19.95 with a glass of Prosecco included.
I will run off the menu in the next few weeks for people to make their choice and to give us an idea of numbers.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
