From  Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

We've yet to find a pill that can single-handedly treat all of our symptoms, and for a lot of us, the meds aren't a good option at all! That can make you think about alternatives to drug therapy, but with so much hype and misinformation out there, how do you know which one(s) to choose?
All the articles this week, both up here and down in Featured Articles, are on the science behind alternative treatments -- including bodywork (where a therapist physically manipulates your body), supplements and more.
On the right, you'll find the latest entries to the glossary.
Take care of yourself!

Sensory Distress: The Other Side of Fibromyalgia
“If we lose sight of pleasures … that intoxicate the senses in the most sensuous and beautiful and simplest of ways, then we’ve lost a lot.” – Savannah Page

Researchers have used heat, electricity, chemicals, and pressure to evoke pain in FM patients and controls, and in every study people with FM have felt pain at lower levels of stimulation than healthy controls.
We know, though, that FM is about more than pain. People with Fibromyalgia report they have problems with sensitivity to stimuli in general. They tend to become more fatigued in stimuli-saturated environments, and they tend to retreat to less stimulating environments such as their bedroom. Research studies have borne out FM patients’ experiences, confirming that they are more sensitive to  stimuli like heat, sound and touch.

Living Longer, Healthier Lives with Resveratrol

Back in 2003, longevity scientists became excited when the natural, plant-derived compound resveratrol was found to extend the life span of yeast cells by as much as 70%.1 What got scientists so interested was that the gene expression changes induced by resveratrol in yeast cells were similar to those thought to confer longer life in human beings.

Five Herbs Everyone With Chronic Pain Should Know About

Fibromyalgia is like the unwanted guest who shows up uninvited to the party and refuses to leave. For those of us who get stuck with this unwanted guest crashing our party, we’ll do or try just about anything to get rid of it. Of course, there is no one treatment or cure that works for everyone. For most, it is a combination of various different approaches that finally restores some level of calm and comfort back to their lives.
Among the various approaches to treating pain is herbal medicine. Unlike typical prescription medications, herbs often provide relief without the various unpleasant – and sometimes harmful – side effects. Here are five herbal treatments that we’ve found to be effective for easing fibromyalgia pain:
  • Turmeric
  • Rhodiola Rosea
  • Celery Seed Extract
  • Ginger
  • Willow Bark

My Story: Fredda Rippen

What were the steps leading up to your diagnosis?
For years I went to doctors asking them to help me figure out why I was in so much pain. I got accused of being a pill seeker many times. I've had 2 fusions, DDD, now scoliosis, osteoarthritis, and have always had extreme pain since I was young. Finally a few years ago I ended up back east and my doctor there referred me to a rheumatologist. He ruled out RA and checked my pressure points and said I have fibromyalgia. It took over 20 years to finally get someone to believe me.

A personal  note from Vicky

My thanks to Kay for covering my classes whilst I went to the New Forest for a long weekend.  We were so lucky with the weather and even though it was pretty wet underfoot, the sun broke through and it was warm.  I managed to walk a lot of the time in a T shirt.  I do think though my 30 year old walking boots (which I thought were well worn in) have had their day and did get pretty foot sore.  T More . . .
ime to upgrade to Gortex I think.  We did 10 miles on Saturday and 8 miles on Sunday and I welcomed the yoga on Monday evening when I got home for a good stretch.

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Yesterday was the warmest Hallowe'en on record!  It was better than some 'summer' days!  I hope it is not a forerunner of a payback severe winter.

Have fun

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical  or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
