Next week it will be a limited edition, delivered early, as I shall be away from Friday until the following Wednesday.  So I may not be able to produce much for you then either.  So, it's apologies in advance for any shortfall in the next two weeks. For now, it's business as usual, so here goes . . . .

ANOTHER PETITION FOR YOU TO SIGN
David Cameron & Nick Clegg: commit to increase NHS funding

The petition text:
Dear David Cameron & Nick Clegg
NHS finances are in crisis: life-saving local services are left with no option but to cut back hours or, worse, close down.
The NHS is something we are all proud of. We all benefit from it, and we are all willing to pay for it to keep it our NHS.
Please commit to increasing NHS funding in real terms if you win next year’s general election.

To the right, you'll find more information about your brain - specifically, the neurotransmitters that cause a lot of our problems. Do you know which ones are responsible for which symptoms? Or how to improve their function? That's all in there.
Take care of yourself!

Five Supplement Mistakes You Don’t Want to Make with Fibromyalgia or Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

“Over the past fifteen  years I’ve spent thousands of dollars on supplements, most of which had absolutely no effect on my symptoms.” Dr. Courtney Craig – Youtube video

To take or not take supplements is a big question in disorders like Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia where the list of FDA approved drugs is short (or non-existent) and not particularly impressive.
Where there are no drugs, though, there are always supplements – each purporting to be helpful – each suggesting it might provide the critical nutrient you need to turn your health around. Hope springs eternal with supplements and maybe it should.
The supplement field – encompassing herbs, vitamins, minerals, neutraceuticals, probiotics, medical foods, etc. is enormous.  With thousands of combinations available and new possibilities coming out regularly, supplements can potentially make a major impact on our health.

Symposium Calls For Use of Immunotherapy To Treat Chronic Pain
“Despite the availability of different drugs, most patients with chronic nociceptive pain do not receive satisfactory pain relief…”

We all know the medical profession is poor at providing pain relief in general, but its record with regards to neuropathic or nerve pain is something else indeed. Despite the fairly large array of drugs physicians use (few of which were developed to reduce nerve pain), no more than 30-40% of  nerve pain patients receive as much as 50% relief from the medications doctors  provide.
Despite research that has uncovered important factors in the production of pain, much clearly remains to be learned.  The production of pathological pain has been shown to be a very complex process. Researchers know, for instance, that damage to the ion channels on nerves, increased levels of excitatory neurotransmitters and reduced activity in the pain inhibition pathways in the brain all play a role.

Welcome to this week's newsletter.

This week we are excited to be launching a new series of videos with the clinic team answering your questions!
To get started, we have three short videos with Alex, answering the questions:

  • What is the difference between ME/CFS and depression?
  • Is it possible to make a full recovery from ME/CFS (and how do we define that)?
  • Should I start with psychology or nutrition treatment?

Brain study hints at how fibromyalgia works

Brain scans show that people with the pain disorder fibromyalgia react differently to what others would consider non-painful sights and sounds, new research suggests.
The small new study provides clues to what might be going wrong in the nervous system of people with fibromyalgia, along with possible new approaches to alleviating their pain.
“If we understand the mechanism, we may come up with new and potentially better forms of treatment,” said lead author Marina López-Solà of the department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of Colorado, Boulder.

Long-Term Opioid Use Can Increase Sensitivity to Chronic Pain

Many people who have been taking opiates for chronic pain can develop serious problems with long-term use. Some of them may even include an addictive disorder due to prolonged exposure to these very powerful medications. Others develop tolerance to the medication and need ever increasing dose increases. Others develop a condition known as hyperalgesia.

‘Invisible disease means I can’t do things girls normally do, like go out’ – Fibromyalgia teen Beth Fuller

Beth Fuller
It is only a couple of decades since Fibromyalgia was recognised as an illness. Danielle McGarry speaks to 17-year-old Hull sufferer Beth Fuller during national awareness week for the invisible disease.
Being in constant pain, and so fatigued that even the simplest everyday tasks become mammoth challenges, is bad enough.
For many people with fibromyalgia (FM), however, these things are only part of the battle. Often, one of the toughest things to deal with is the lack of understanding.
"With chronic fatigue-type conditions, sometimes other people will say, 'Oh, well I feel tired sometimes too, you just have to get on with it'," said Dr Kim Lawson, of Sheffield Hallam University's department of biosciences' Biomedical Research Centre.
"They don't appreciate the severity of it."

Trauma and Fibromyalgia — Black and White? Or 50 Shades of Grey?

Fibromyalgia (FM) is relatively common, with prevalence estimates between 2.0% and 3.5%1,2,3. Its prevalence increases with age, up to around age 60 to 70 years; FM is roughly 5 times more common in women than in men4, and is one of the most common reasons for referral to a rheumatologist5. The etiology and pathophysiology of FM are not well determined, and while there are several extant theories — including muscle dysfunction or misuse, central sensitization, sleep disorders, and altered stress axis function — there is little consistent evidence to support, or refute, any of these.

I saw my GP on Monday to discuss the results of the blood tests and ECG.  All is 'normal' so I guess my episodes are merely another manifestation of FMS.  So nothing to worry about!

I wish you well as we begin this last quarter of 2014

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
