FMS eNews 05/04/14

I think this is a fairly 'normal' eNews after all.  I have also been working on a post FibCon version which will be posted shortly.
I had an MRI scan this week - six months after my eye operation.  There is no sign of further cancer, so I am grateful for that.  I hope you had happy Mothering Sunday experiences; those who are mothers or still have mothers to celebrate it with.

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I find fibromyalgia exercise research tired, flawed, and harmful in many ways, but I think it can also provide us with some valuable information. Get a look at three new studies and what they could mean for us, below.
Also this week, the importance of pushing to find out what's going on in your body, and a look at something that's helping me get by.
A couple of weeks ago, a temporary glitch in the system mistakenly sent some of you to the About.com home page instead of to the links you clicked. Sorry that happened! To make sure you don't miss anything, I've linked the three top stories from that issue over on the right, and I pulled the same content for Featured Articles this week.
Take care of yourself!

Slideshow: A Visual Guide to Migraine Headaches
What Is a Migraine?

A migraine is a headache with throbbing pain that is usually worse on one side of the head. The pain is often severe enough to hamper daily activities and may last from four hours to three days if untreated. More than one in 10 Americans, including one in 6 women, have migraines, but many have been told mistakenly that they have a sinus or tension headache. Foods, stress, and hormones can be migraine triggers.

Magnetic Effect: New Brain Technology Reduces Pain in Fibromyalgia

Numerous studies have found that altered activity in several parts of the brain correlates with pain and fatigue in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. rTMS, which uses a magnetic coil to alter brain activity levels, has  been found to improve the symptoms of a wide variety of neurological and psychiatric disorders in including migraine, stroke, tinnitus, Parkinson’s and  depression.  It can reduce or increase the excitability of the corticospinal tract depending on the configuration of the coils.

Fibromyalgia has many causes and there are many things that can make your symptoms worse.
For example, heavy drinking of coffee, tea and soft drinks (including de-caffeinated coffee, tea and soft drinks). Many of these beverages cause the loss of both water and water-soluble B vitamins from the body. B vitamins are needed to repair damaged nerves.
Heavy smoking or drinking of alcohol, use of antibiotics and birth control pills, as well as stress can all damage your recovery.
And of course, there are many prescription medications that are associated with fibromyalgia as a side effect.
If you are taking one or more of the medications listed below, it can greatly add to the amount of time it will take for you to see results in repairing and reversing your fibromyalgia.

Diet soda, aspartame linked to premature deaths in women

A decade-long study of 60,000 women has confirmed that drinking diet soda sweetened with aspartame is linked with a 30 percent increase in heart attack risk and a 50 percent increase in death risk.
The findings, presented at the American College of Cardiology(1), have already been partially swept under the rug with the false explanation that diet drinks don't necessarily cause these risks but are instead merely correlated with them. "Women who toss back too many diet sodas may be trying to make up for unhealthy habits," claims an article on CNBC,(2) while citing no evidence whatsoever to support the claim. Keep in mind that any time a synthetic vitamin is correlated with increased mortality, the entire scientific community immediately describes those synthetic vitamins as "causing" death.

Gamechanger Going Viral - March 31st

Over ten years of medical research has yielded some promising results – “It is a tip of the iceberg” – in terms of finding something to finally ease our battle with FM. Dr William “Skip” Pridgen has been researching FM for the past 15 years while simultaneously working in this full-time surgical practice, Tuscaloosa Surgical Associates PC. Through his research, he has developed a new drug and a treatment that may one day actually provide a cure for FM! IMCHis research has also led him to create Innovative Med Concepts, which is a new biotech company that one day hopes to bring forth the medical discoveries to the marketplace.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
