3 Processed Fats to Watch Out

Yet again the food industry would seem to be putting profit before safety.  The carcinogenic effects of fat hydrogenation, with its trans-fat byproducts have finally been recognized by the regulators and they are slowly being removed from our food. However, some of the alternative manufacturing methods have even bigger health risks than the toxic processes they are designed to replace.
All commercial industries have at their core the basic requirement to make money for their shareholders. However, for some industries, such as food and drink, the drive to cut costs and increase profits is put ahead of ethical concerns such as animal welfare and even human safety.

7 Astonishing Reasons Why Eating Chocolate Is Good for You

Good news for chocaholics: Numerous scientific studies have now demonstrated just how healthy chocolate can be. It’s important to remember however that it’s the cacao in chocolate that has the benefits. While chocolate has often been given a bad rap and associated with weight gain and unhealthy lifestyle, the real reason for this is actually not the cacao at all but is the high sugar content of some chocolate products. Cacao is highly nutritious. The darker the chocolate (i.e. the higher the cacao content), the lower it typically is in sugar and the healthier it is for you.
Below are 7 reasons, backed by scientific research, why chocolate may be good for you:

What is IBS,  and might probiotics help?

What is IBS and why do I have it?
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is the most common functional gastrointestinal disorder affecting around a third of the UK population at some point in their lives, with one in ten people suffering from symptoms of IBS severe enough for them to seek help from the GP (1). Many with IBS symptoms don’t actually visit the GP making it hard to gain accurate statistics, but it is a disorder which appears to be on the rise.
In order to understand why this may be, it is important to know what IBS actually means. IBS is actually a term covering a group of symptoms including constipation, diarrhoea, bloating, abdominal pain, excessive wind and cramping.  There are many factors which contribute to someone developing IBS such as genetic disposition, allergy, infection, parasites, medications overload, of course bacterial imbalance as well as psychosocial issues such as stress or unexpressed emotions (2). Many of these factors are exacerbated by modern life and our diet, including the prevalence of refined sugars and alcohol, fizzy drinks and a lack of exercise and spirituality. People are taking more pain killers, anti-depressants as well as being under emotional and psychological pressure, being ‘stressed’ or anxious  essentially. This is possibly the reason why IBS appears to be on the increase.

Holy Basil – The Elixir of Life by Suzy Cohen

If you are like me, I have favorite teas. Tulsi tea with a little lemon and ginger is one of those great teas that help me de-stress and putting one foot in front of the other when I feel overwhelmed. Tulsi, commonly known as holy basil, is a treasured sacred medicinal plant of India. It’s known to ease pain, improve breathing (like for asthma), and reduce inflammation. It is a strong antioxidant too.
I don’t know about you, but I feel like we have more stress nowadays than we did 20 years ago. The stress may be mental, emotional, behavioral or physical. The stress makes you feel like you can’t cope with your situation. As a result, you may feel beat up, burned out, tense, irritated, overwhelmed, foggy in the brain or just plain mad. You may not (probably don’t) sleep well either.  If I’ve described you, then it’s safe to say you need some kind of stress soother before illness develops.  Holy basil may just be what you need, but don’t take my word for it, let’s look at some science.

An open letter to Dr. Richard Horton and The Lancet

In February, 2011, The Lancet published an article called “Comparison of adaptive pacing therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, graded exercise therapy, and specialist medical care for chronic fatigue syndrome (PACE): a randomized trial.” The article reported that two “rehabilitative” approaches, cognitive behavior therapy and graded exercise therapy, were effective in treating chronic fatigue syndrome, also known as myalgic encephalomyelitis, ME/CFS and CFS/ME. The study received international attention and has had widespread influence on research, treatment options and public attitudes.

The PACE study was an unblinded clinical trial with subjective primary outcomes, a design that requires strict vigilance in order to prevent the possibility of bias. Yet the study suffered from major flaws that have raised serious concerns about the validity, reliability and integrity of the findings. The patient and advocacy communities have known this for years, but a recent in-depth report on this site, which included statements from five of us, has brought the extent of the problems to the attention of a broader public. The PACE investigators have replied to many of the criticisms, but their responses have not addressed or answered key concerns.
