Recovery from my cold was not as rapid as I had hoped.  I've been feeling rather like this!

I had to cancel a hospital appointment and I didn't make it to the Horsham Fibro morning meeting.  Here's hoping for better times.
You will see that I have added some 'Gadgets' to the right, which I hope you will find useful. These will appear on every blog.  Some variations can be found by refreshing your browser.

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Adrienne Dellwo
Medical marijuana is hard to come by, but as it becomes more common, we're getting new information about how effective it may be for us - including how it compares to approved fibromyalgia drugs. More on that, below.
Also this week, a look at fibromyalgia history shows it's clearly not a "new" or "fad" illness, plus a look at some changes you'll soon be seeing.
For my readers with ME/CFS - I realize I haven't had a lot for you lately and I apologize! The Featured Article content is all about you this week, and I promise I'll let you know about some new research next time.
Take care of yourself!

Medical Madness: How the Feds Approved Drugs for Fibromyalgia That Don’t Work Well While Barring Access to One That Might

Three drugs ( Lyrica, Cymbalta, and Savella) have been approved for Fibromyalgia. On the face of it  that’s great.
That means three drugs have successfully undergone several large and rigorous clinical trials under the eye of the FDA. The drugs helped legitimize FM and their tremendous financial success revealed a population of 5 million  or so FM  patients that were eager for relief.  That was a huge step forward. Some even divide Fibromyalgia into Fibromyalgia pre-Lyrica (pre-2007) and FM post-Lyrica era’s. They made that much  of a difference. It doesn’t mean, however, that these drugs will  work for you or even that they’ll work all that well  if they do. The  Food and Drug Administration (FDA)  does not require a drug to be a  cure to be approved; it simply requires  that a  drug provide a significant  clinical benefit to a portion of the patient population and there’s the rub.

A Closer Look at Natural Killer Cells In Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Three Natural Ways to Boost Them

Natural Killer (NK) cells are specialized immune cells of the innate, non-specific immune system. Comprising about 10% of white blood cells they are densest in the liver, spleen, blood, lung, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. In response to an immune threat, NK cells release a class of chemical messengers (cytokines, IFN-y) that recruit T lymphocytes and other immune cells to attack. They also function to communicate to other immune cells to curtail their offenses, thus inhibiting an overactive response.

Fibromyalgia and sleep problems
What kind of sleep problems are associated with fibromyalgia?

People with fibromyalgia often awaken tired, even though they report sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disrupted by pain, and many people with fibromyalgia have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.

A Personal Note from Vicky
After the climb to the top of the temple at Coba, Mexico.

As always I’m grateful to Sharon, Julia and Kay for stepping in and covering my classes while I’ve been away.  I was back on by the Monday morning but coping with 400 emails and jet lag. Sorry to miss yet another Monday morning but I then went down with a flu like illness.  I think I need a holiday! I am actually not planning any more breaks until the autumn when my husband has mentioned the possibility of a cycling holiday in France. . . . . .

. . . . While stress related to work and family remains the number one cause of insomnia, eating the wrong foods -- such as those rich in sugar, caffeine, gluten or polyunsaturated fat -- can also contribute to insomnia. Therefore, improving one's diet is an important first step toward ending insomnia, especially if one favors foods that are known to improve sleep.
1. Almonds  2. Cherries 3. Bananas 4. Valerian 5. Oatmeal

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
