Understanding fibromyalgia: using twin studies to devise a diagnostic blood testfibromyalgia

What are the aims of this research? The aim of this study is to develop a diagnostic blood test by examining samples and measurements taken from 400 twin volunteers, in which one twin has fibromyalgia, to try to identify markers in their DNA that are associated with the disease. Why is this research important? Fibromyalgia is a long term painful condition which is poorly understood and difficult to manage. At present, treatment is limited and, in many cases, is unsatisfactory. Currently there is no blood test for fibromyalgia: this makes diagnosis difficult.

New blood test for fibromyalgia moves a step closer -

For years there was doubt among the medical profession whether fibromyalgia actually existed – except in the minds of patients.
There's still no specific blood test, scan or x-ray that can confirm a diagnosis, although blood tests are often carried out to rule out other conditions.
Now scientists at King’s College London, FUNDED by a three year grant of £171,000 from us, are hoping their latest research will lead to a reliable blood test to enable doctors to make a proper diagnosis.

Why You Should Be Using Coconut Oil

. . . . Though it may be surprising to most people, coconuts produce, among a slew of other diverse products, a kind of cooking oil that is much better for your health and well-being than the run-of-the-mill butter or vegetable oils that you might ordinarily use. . . . .

Drive me Crazy

I hate driving! (Mind you, I also hate being a passenger with some people, too...but that’s another story!) Even in my cute little car. Driving can be a major stressor. And we are all very aware that stress is a common trigger of flare ups. As well as being stressful, driving requires you to sit and move in ways that can make your bits hurt more. Trains, buses and taxis may be options, but public transportation comes with its own stresses and is not always available or affordable. Many people with fibromyalgia cannot walk or bike very far without pain, and getting a ride is not always easy. As a result of all this, you may not be able to avoid driving, especially if you work. But, perhaps, there are a few things you can do to better cope with stressful driving situations.

Pam Stewart is going to be taking part in a walking marathon.

Pam is taking part in a challenging walking marathon on 21st June along the Thames path starting and returning to Windsor. The walk has been organised by The Street Children charity so they will benefit from the entrance fee but donations will go to FMA UK to continue work on getting fibromyalgia prioritised for research and better treatment options.
“It will help me on my way if I know each step is getting me closer to the finish and achieving a reasonable amount for a cause I believe in wholeheartedly.”
The text below is from the JustGiving page
“My husband had many years of suffering through this cruel disease and still people are going through the same agonies as he did many years later.  More people need to be aware of the problems fibromyalgia causes and the heartache it brings to families.
I do my best to convince politicians and medical professionals to make use of the known treatments that can be effective up to a point, but far more needs to be done if the suffering is to be truly relieved.
Any amount raised will be a help to FMA UK so that they can "fight for freedom from fibromyalgia" and perhaps the t-shirt on the walk will make more people aware as well.”
