How was Fibromyalgia Awareness Day for you?  Mine was great!  The Horsham Support Group held a dinner - chairs festooned with purple and yellow balloons!  It had been engineered to serve a multiple purpose; not only to mark FM Awareness Day but also to mark my retirement as Group Leader and my forthcoming 80th birthday; to raise money for fibromyalgia research; and we were honoured that Pam Stewart, Chair of the Fibromyalgia Association UK and of the European Network of Fibromyalgia Associations was present. The photo is of Pam and myself. It was a memorable evening and, together with recent donations over £600 was raised for FMA UK for FM research.  Donations of prizes also enabled everyone present to take home a handsome gift - and I was presented with a beautiful bouquet.  Most of those present wore purple or yellow, or both!
I have put together a presentation with some photos that you can see here. (They might take a few seconds to download and appear as an attachment!)
I haven't done this on the blog before so I hope it works!  If you are not familiar with such presentations, click on 'Slide Show' at the top left of the window, then 'Start from first Slide' and just click anywhere on each page to go to the next one.

Acupuncture & Other Traditional Chinese Treatments

Acupuncture has been an important feature of my fibromyalgia remission and improvement in quality of life. But just because it worked for me doesn't mean it's for everyone. See what the research shows so you can make an informed decision. You'll find an article on acupuncture for fibromyalgia below, followed by one on ME/CFS and another that lets you know what to expect at an appointment.
After that, you'll find information on more aspects of TCM - Traditional Chinese Medicine - that may be beneficial for us.
Take care of yourself!

Making Awareness Day Personal by Purple Law Lady

For 2012, 2013 and 2014, I went BIG for Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. This year, I'll admit to dropping the ball. I'm tired, physically and emotionally. I'm tired of fighting the world. So this year, I've been fighting for me!
I'm sorry if you feel like I have let you down and not been there to support you.I made this video (quite a while ago) because I am lucky enough to have a Mommy who loves me and tries to understand. (I'm not so sure about the rest of the family.) But, because of this, it upset me so much when I hear from so many of you that you don't have the support and understanding you need. Friends and family are supposed to be there for whenever you need them. Most days, I get a message or comment from some-one who is lacking support from their nearest and dearest. Sometimes, it's because you hide your pain, or you haven't asked for help. Sometimes it's because they just don't get it. I'm hoping that presenting these people with this video might help.

Fibromyalgia and its unusual symptoms

Fibromyalgia is a common and chronic health problem that causes pains and tenderness all  over the body. It affects millions of people worldwide, people of all ages, including children. Fibromyalgia affects people not only physically, but also mentally and socially.  Although women suffer the most from fibromyalgia, men develop it too. The word fibromyalgia comes from the Greek algos meaning “pain”, myosmeaning “muscles” and fibromeaning “fibrous tissue” Fibromyalgia is seen as a rheumatic disorder, but it does not cause joint damage or inflammation as arthritis does, even if it is very similar to arthritis because of the severe pain and tiredness.

Study Suggests Higher B-12 and Folate Levels Needed in ME/CFS

The Gottfries Clinic in Sweden is a bright spot in Scandanavia. With it's six doctors it sees about 2,500 chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) patients a year.
It recently examined one of the most intriguing but poorly studied treatment questions in chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia: how to effectively use B12 and folic acid. B12 and folic acid have long been used by alternative health practitioners to treat ME/CFS and FM but go gold standards or validated protocols exist.
B12 deficiency is associated with a host of symptoms including depression, irritability, poor muscle functioning, inflammation, poor detoxification. It's usually easily treated with oral B-12, but the clinic's 15 years of experience indicated that most ME/CFS and FM patients require B12 injections and higher doses of folic acid to get the full effect. The need for such high levels of B12 and folic acid suggested something is blocking the B-12/folic utilization in ME/CFS patients.

Scientists Find Sniffing Rosemary Can Increase Memory By 75%

Rosemary is a wonderful herb with a tradition of use spanning millennia. It has innumerable uses in both the kitchen and in herbal medicine.
Did you know that rosemary has been associated with memory enhancement since ancient times? It is true – and it has even been referred to from the latter part of the Elizabethan Era to the Early Romantic period as the herb of remembrance. In Shakespeare’s Hamlet, Ophelia says, “There’s rosemary, that’s for remembrance.” (Hamlet, iv. 5.) It has also long been used as a symbol for remembrance during weddings, war commemorations and funerals in Europe and Australia. [1] Mourners in old times would wear it as a buttonhole, burn it as incense or throw it into graves as a symbol of remembrance for the dead.

Vibration Exercise Offers Relief to Patients with Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a condition characterized by widespread pain in the musculoskeletal system, as well as persistent fatigue. Patients that have been diagnosed with the condition are often hesitant to participate in exercise programs designed for fibro treatment as it may cause pain. However, new research offers information on a few form of exercise that uses vibrations to offer pain relief.
A pilot study published in June 2014 offers information on whole-body vibration therapy and how the exercises can reduce pain and improve the quality of life for those with fibromyalgia. The study was conducted by Indiana University researches, and the findings are promising, but not completely clear as of yet.

Rules for Using Essential Oils

No joke, I probably have more than 18 little bottles of essential oils in my house. They are in every room, on top of the coffee table, on end tables, in the kitchen drawer, on my night-table, and in my purse.  One day I will make you a video and walk through my house and show you, lol! But for now, let’s go over the rules of using essential oils. There are basically 3 ways to use them. And it’s easy as ABC!

  • A  for Apply to skin.
  • B  for Breathe it in!
  • C  for Consume internally.

Green Apples and Your Brain

When I was chopping up green apples to put into my chicken salad I wondered two things:

  1. Does anyone else realize that apples are brain food?
  2. Do all of you see your food as “medicine” or am I just slightly neurotic?

  • When I eat avocados all I can think of is glutathione!
  • Sprinkle cayenne and voila, capsaicin!
  • Tomatoes, lycopene.
  • Tossed salad, methyl folate!
  • Almonds, aspirin.

Ok, I think it’s just me, let’s move on. . . . .

A personal  note from Vicky - 1

Sussex really is a beautiful county particularly when the sun shines.  The picture shows me up on the Downs north of Shoreham where I did a 9 mile walk with friends.  I consider myself reasonably fit having managed to cycle up to 61 miles in a day in Vietnam recently but using different muscles takes its toll and I was stiff and sore the next day.  I decided if I couldn’t sort that out using what I know there was something wrong.  I used stretches, the spiky balls and ‘The Grid’ (a rather  evolved foam roller) I’m glad to say it did the trick.  Foam rollers are something we are talking about today as I am introducing them into my private classes.
