WORDz for the WEEK

175.  You cannot find peace by avoidig life.

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

It's already started in my neighborhood - random explosions that make me jump out of my skin and can kick up pain and other symptoms. I hate to bag on something as beloved as 4th of July fireworks, but they can really make our lives unpleasant! See what can help you get through the next couple of weeks, below.
Also this week: you may have heard the term "diagnosis of exclusion," but do you really understand what it means? Get a definition as well as what illnesses are generally excluded before FMS & ME/CFS are diagnosed; also, learn all about a supplement that helps some of us alleviate symptoms.
Down in Featured Articles, you'll find some books and products that I like and thought you might be interested in as well.
Take care of yourself!

Drug Repurposing I: Antibiotics to Reduce Microglial Activation in ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia?
The quickest way to relief
 for FM and ME/CFS
 is probably
drug repurposing

Tetracycline antibiotics are generally used to treat bacterial infections, but animal studies indicate that some tetracycline antibiotics are effective microglial inhibitors and have anti-inflammatory properties.  The microglia protect the neurons by calling up powerful immune and neurotoxic factors in times of danger, but chronic microglial activation can contribute to pain sensitization and neuroinflammation.  Some researchers believe chronic microglial activation is producing neuroinflammation in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.

Combating Overwhelm, Resistance, or Listlessness in Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Do you ever feel resistant and overwhelmed in response to some everyday needs or tasks such as: Taking a rest break when you know your body needs it? Refilling your pills or charting your progress as you are trying to get better? Maybe even simple tasks such as brushing your teeth or getting ready for bed? Part of it is that the flu-like symptoms and brain fog of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) or Fibromyalgia (FM) make any seemingly easy task more difficult. Another part of it—the part I want to offer some help for in this article—is that the brains of people with ME/CFS or FM work differently from those of healthy people.

Fermenting Health: How A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patient Reversed Decades of Gut Problems – From Home
Audrey’s Story

Audrey & her husband
In 1984 I was diagnosed with Epstein Barr Virus after sudden onset of symptoms and tested positive for herpes zoster and Coxsackie.  I suffered severe gut issues (candida from years of antibiotics, acid reflux, cramping, bloating) as well as severe brain fog that I have lived with 24/7 for 30 years.  I also started experiencing severe allergies and skin rashes, especially to environment stuff, as well as chemical sensitivity.  Prior to diagnosis, my diet consisted of wheat, sugar, dairy, carbs, etc. Audrey and her husband I was given Meyers cocktail IVs and high doses of vitamin C with no relief.  I researched and began a nutritional program, eliminating wheat, sugar, and dairy from my diet.  My gut issues were less after about 1 year, but were never gone.

The Pain of Fibromyalgia

John Molot
It’s summer time, and like everyone else, I can’t wait to have a holiday.  Mine is starting today.  It’s time to get away and relax. But what am I really getting away from?  Not my family or my friends – I love those guys and worry about them wherever I am. I need to get away from work, but I love my job.  I love what I do and I am proud of what I have accomplished.  So, why do I  need a holiday?

Your Team of Advisors: Who's who?

Today is a very exciting day for PatientsLikeMe. We're thrilled to announce our first-ever PatientsLikeMe Team of Advisors, a group of 14 fellow members chosen to work with us this year on research-related initiatives.
What will they be doing? They'll be giving regular feedback about how PatientsLikeMe research can be even more helpful. This includes creating a "guide" that highlights new standards for researchers to better engage with patients like you.

Fibromyalgia "Is All in Your Head" and Other Abusive Nonsense

Personally, I ignore the “it’s all in your head” chatter regarding fibromyalgia. In fact, I don’t even give that comment the time of day. Why bother with such nonsense?
It’s simple to brush off such rude and ignorant comments when they come from strangers. But that’s not always the case. What if insensitive and hurtful words are cast your way by those close to you?

Yogurt buyers beware: 'All Natural' yogurt products found to contain aspartame and artificial colors

If you're buying so-called "All Natural" yogurt sold at the grocery store, you might assume the phrase means the product contains nothing artificial or synthetic. After all, that's the definition of "all natural."

The Cool Herb
Guess which Herb is “Cool”?

Here are a few hints:

  • The United States produces about 7 million pounds of this plant a year.
  • Washington State, USA grows 16,000 acres annually.
  • This herb was found in Egyptian pyramids and is mentioned in the Bible.
  • This herb is safe to use for medicine and food, easy to grow and totally delicious!
  • 90% of the oil harvested from this plant is used for oral care and confections (only 1 drop of this oil will flavor one tube of toothpaste).

Perhaps by now you have guessed that I am speaking of Peppermint - a very “cool” herb. This lush, rich green herb will take the heat out of a bee sting, cool a sunburn, reduce a fever, and simply help you feel cooler on a hot day. Peppermint is a hybrid mint, a cross of spearmint and watermint, and has been used medicinally for many centuries.

Why is Peppermint Such a Valuable, Hard-Working Herb?

ESA claimants subject to massive increase in sanctions

Employment and support allowance (ESA) claimants in the work-related activity group (WRAG) are being subjected to a massively increased sanctions regime that deliberately targets the most vulnerable. Sanctions, primarily aimed at claimants on the work programme who have mental health conditions or learning difficulties, have quadrupled in the course of a year, even though referrals to the programme have fallen by 43%.
The number of sanctions rose from 1,102 a month in December 2012 to 4,789 a month in December 2013, the most recent date figures are available for.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
