From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Adrienne Dellwo
I'm loving the variety of directions researchers are looking for clues to chronic fatigue syndrome! Just days ago, a study came out looking at a region of the brain that we know causes fatigue in other neurological diseases, and sure enough, it's not working right in ME/CFS, either! More on that, below.
Also this week, a variety of ways for you to improve your cognitive function and keep your brain healthy, and some things I've learned about sticking to a gluten-free diet that may help you.
Down in Featured Articles, it's all about improving your day-to-day life in simple, practical ways.
You might remember that I recently mentioned upcoming changes to my site and the About.com network. Those are gradually rolling out now. At this point, the only change on the FMS/ME/CFS site is that you can no longer comment at the bottom of the page.
Never fear, though - I'm now including links at the end to forum threads created for each article, so just click there!
I'll have more on the changes next week, including a tour of a site that's already got the new layout.
Take care of yourself!

Treating Viral Reactivation: Health Rising’s Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia Expert Panel Provides Answers

Health Rising’s ME/CFS and FM Experts panel answers one question a month from the ME/CFS and FM communities. The April question picked by community vote involved a patient with signs of viral reactivation.   We were looking  for a variety of answers and we got them. Learn more about the ME/CFS experts panel here and here. Next month we welcome Dr. Courtney Craig, a recovered ME/CFS patient and chiropracter/nutritionist to the panel. Suggestions for more panel participants are welcome. We’re particularly interested in practitioners using alternative approaches. Not all the experts provided answers but prepare yourself  - this is a long post!

Study Suggests Both Small AND Large Fiber Neuropathy Present in Fibromyalgia

With three studies finding evidence of small fiber neuropathy in significant numbers of people with Fibromyalgia, the skin has become of increasing interest. (Small fiber neuropathy refers to damage to the small nerve fibers in the skin. Skin biopsies are used to determine if SFN is present). Caro was the latest researcher to find evidence of nerve problems in FM and it turns out he was the first as well.

Understanding Peripheral Neuropathy -- the Basics
What Is Peripheral Neuropathy?

The name of the condition tells you a bit about what it is:

  • Peripheral: Beyond (in this case, beyond the brain and the spinal cord.)
  • Neuro-: Related to the nerves
  • -pathy: Disease

Peripheral neuropathy refers to the conditions that result when nerves that carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from the rest of the body are damaged or diseased.

Welcome to the June Issue of Living Well with Fibromyalgia

Feeling Groovy was supposed to be the theme for this issue - we were supposed to share ways in which we made ourselves feel better...it didn't quite work that way. I tell you why in the What I Have to Say section at the beginning (no, I'm not telling you now!)

HealClick Fibro Newsletter

In the early days of HealClick, we heard from a lot of Fibromyalgia users that it wasn't the easiest thing to navigate and the patient matching was too raw. Well, we listened to you and just completed a huge redesign to make you feel at home. The entire site now revolves around your condition. Finding discussion topics, treatment reviews, and your patient matches all work for you now, not the other way around.
Visit us today to see for yourself. Also, be sure to check out our daily health tracker by clicking "My Health" at the top. It takes a few seconds a day to see changes over time, and all this data is made anonymous and used for research.

A Point of View: Happiness and disability

Surveys reveal that people with disabilities consistently report a good quality of life, says Tom Shakespeare. So why is it often assumed they are unhappy?
Have you ever thought to yourself: "I'd rather be dead than disabled?" It's not an unusual reflection. Disability, in everyday thought, is associated with failure, with dependency and with not being able to do things. We feel sorry for disabled people, because we imagine it must be miserable to be disabled.
But in fact we're wrong. It's sometimes called the "disability paradox". Surveys reveal people with disabilities consistently report a quality of life as good as, or sometimes even better than, that of non-disabled people.  Impairment usually makes little difference to quality of life.

Ubiquinol - A More Advanced Form of the Energy-Producing Nutrient CoQ-10

With nearly 40 years of medical research showing its importance in managing a wide range of serious illnesses, it's not surprising that CoQ-10 has at times been described as "The Miracle Vitamin" and "The New Fountain of Youth." Now a new form of CoQ-10 called ubiquinol makes the benefits of CoQ-10 even more readily available to the body.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ-10) is a vitamin-like nutrient that is present in virtually every cell of the body and is an essential component of each cell's ability to produce energy. It is also a powerful antioxidant - a chemical that "mops up" potentially harmful substances.

Newsletter

I don't know about you but chronic fatigue is one of the worst parts of living with Fibromyalgia. I hate the days of feeling like I'm glued to my bed or couch and even thought of getting up is exhausting.
I've seen great results with Malic Acid, a natural ingredient generally found in sour fruits such as green apples and grapes, malic acid works with magnesium to produce ATP – our body’s source of energy. Biologists at Georgia State University have even referred to it as the ‘energy currency of life’.  I know I’m not alone when I say I could use a little more ‘energy currency’.
For those suffering from Fibromyalgia, malic acid offers even more than a boost in much needed energy.  According to a 1995 study in the Journal of Rheumatology, Fibromyalgia patients treated with a combination of malic acid and magnesium saw significant reductions in the severity of pain & tenderness.  Less pain and tenderness equals a happier me this summer.
Of course, there are other ways to boost your energy this summer, and we’ll get into those in in the coming weeks.  In the meantime, malic acid is a great place to start.  It packs the one two punch of increased energy and decreased pain/tenderness for Fibromyalgia sufferers.

A personal note from Vicky

We have quite a few people joining our mailing list this week so welcome.
New classes We have now started the 5.35pm class on a Monday.  I will start the Tuesday evening 7.30 class as soon as I have enough people to make it viable and that would be 6 people.  Could you let me know if you would like to change to a Tuesday or add another class? I have decided against the Thursday morning class and am waiting to see if there is enough interest from local businesses to run a Monday lunchtime class.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.  Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
