Deficiency of Digestive Enzymes

I think that digestive enzymes need to be given the importance they deserve. Without the optimum amount of these enzymes our digestion and absorption of food and nutrients will be compromised and this can cause or add to many troublesome symptoms and I believe that by improving the efficiency of our digestive system and absorption of essential nutrients are essential for Fibromyalgia sufferers to be able to get back to lasting better health.

Also this week, why ME/CFS could lead to broken bones, and why it's a bad idea to take too narrow a view of these illnesses.

Vicky's Newsletter

Well Richard has retired and started his first project, the conversion of our kitchen and dining room into one big L shaped room.  I’ve not been very keen on this project from the start and yes I know it will be lovely when it’s finished but…  I feel I’ve been invaded.  I’ve got kind of used to my own space as have the cats!  I think they may need therapy.  I’m going out a lot and I’m afraid with no sink, oven or hob our diet has gone a bit to pot and everything is being microwaved.  I’m told the  project will only last a couple of months…

New Approach to Chronic Pain Leads to Novel Treatment Approaches: Antibiotics Anyone?

Pain Is Not All the Same
Brain imaging studies like functional magnetic resonance imagery (FMRI) have provided tantalizing
insights into the operation of the human brain. In this blog I’m going to review and highlight research and novel approaches by one of the leading researchers in the rapidly evolving area of chronic pain and the brain, Dr. A. Vania Apkarian, and his colleagues at Northwestern University, Chicago, Illinois.

Pick the Question of the Month: The ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia Doctors’ Poll for April

The ten practitioners from Health Rising’s ME/CFS and FM Experts Panel has agreed to answer one question a month from the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Fibromyalgia community. We got about 50 questions and I winnowed them down to nine.  (It wasn’t easy)  I was looking for questions that might have application to a broad group of people and  that provided a good amount of information. Questions that were very basic (what is the right approach to treating ME/CFS or FM?), that were very specialized (why are my hands shaking?), that contained too many questions for the doctors to answer  (please tell  how to treat x,y and z) or that asked questions about research, how to find a doctor in a specific location and the like didn’t make the cut. Please use the poll at the end of the list of questions to pick the top three questions you’d like to see answered. The nine ME/CFS practitioners will answer the question that gets the most votes.

Slideshow: What to do Today to Sleep Better Tonight
Avoid Sleeping In

As tempting as it may be, don't try to make up for a lack of sleep by staying in bed on the weekends. Sleeping in won't make up for a sleep deficit. In fact, according to a recent Harvard study, when you snooze extra hours to compensate for sleep deprivation, your ability to focus is worse than if you had stayed up all night.

What's Your Pain Tolerance?
Everyone struggles with pain at some point, but how you tolerate pain can be up to you - By Katrina Woznicki

Why is back pain or a knee injury annoying to one person and sheer agony to another? Turns out, an individual's tolerance to pain is as unique as the person, and is shaped by some surprising biological factors, as well as some psychological factors that we can actually try to control.

What is Oil Pulling?  (Is it a good idea?)

Oil pulling – or oil swishing – is the practice of swishing oil around your mouth. Not all too fun a
concept when put literally, eh?
The catch (and the reason the internet is going wild over it) is, when oil pulling is done right (see below) you experience some really phenomenal health benefits.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources. Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.

FibCon 2014

This FMS eNews is devoted to the Fibromyalgia Conference held at the Chichester Park Hotel from 28th-31st March 2014.  I have assembled links to the speakers' and therapists' or their organizations' web pages, where possible. I have not attempted to reproduce their lectures although I took copious notes.  This blogpage directs you to their online presence where you can read more about the work they do.  They are assembled in alphabetical order of the surnames of the speakers with photos when available. Quotes are, on the whole, direct from the respective websites.  I hope that, whether or not you attended the conference, you will find this guide helpful.

Dr Natasha Campbell-McBride MD,GAPS ™ - Guts and Psychology Syndrome

"All diseases begin in the gut! The Father of modern medicine, Hippocrates, made this statement more than two thousand years ago. The more we learn with our modern scientific tools, the more we realise just how correct Hippocrates was: all diseases do begin in the gut! Science has discovered, that about 90% of all cells and all genetic material of the human body belongs to the gut flora - a mixture of various microbes, which live inside our digestive tract. So, in reality your body is just a shell, a 10%, providing a habitat for this mass of micro-creatures living inside you; and their role in your health and physiology is monumental. Our modern world poses many dangers for human gut flora, and once it is damaged, the health of the whole body enters a downward slide towards disease."

What Is a Migraine?

A migraine is a headache with throbbing pain that is usually worse on one side of the head. The pain is often severe enough to hamper daily activities and may last from four hours to three days if untreated. More than one in 10 Americans, including one in 6 women, have migraines, but many have been told mistakenly that they have a sinus or tension headache. Foods, stress, and hormones can be migraine triggers.

Fibromyalgia has many causes and there are many things that can make your symptoms worse.
For example, heavy drinking of coffee, tea and soft drinks (including de-caffeinated coffee, tea and soft drinks). Many of these beverages cause the loss of both water and water-soluble B vitamins from the body. B vitamins are needed to repair damaged nerves.
Heavy smoking or drinking of alcohol, use of antibiotics and birth control pills, as well as stress can all damage your recovery.
And of course, there are many prescription medications that are associated with fibromyalgia as a side effect.
If you are taking one or more of the medications listed below, it can greatly add to the amount of time it will take for you to see results in repairing and reversing your fibromyalgia.

Diet soda, aspartame linked to premature deaths in women

A decade-long study of 60,000 women has confirmed that drinking diet soda sweetened with aspartame is linked with a 30 percent increase in heart attack risk and a 50 percent increase in death risk.
The findings, presented at the American College of Cardiology(1), have already been partially swept under the rug with the false explanation that diet drinks don't necessarily cause these risks but are instead merely correlated with them. "Women who toss back too many diet sodas may be trying to make up for unhealthy habits," claims an article on CNBC,(2) while citing no evidence whatsoever to support the claim. Keep in mind that any time a synthetic vitamin is correlated with increased mortality, the entire scientific community immediately describes those synthetic vitamins as "causing" death.

Over ten years of medical research has yielded some promising results – “It is a tip of the iceberg” – in terms of finding something to finally ease our battle with FM. Through his research, he has developed a new drug and a treatment that may one day actually provide a cure for FM!
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
