Testing Exercise Limits; Benefits of Mindfulness

We know that too much exertion is one of the worst things for someone with ME/CFS, but some researchers think testing exercise limits may be a key to finding the right kind of treatment for the disease. That's below, and farther down you'll find a lot more information on exercise.
Also this week, a look at how a state of mind called mindfulness could improve some aspects of fibromyalgia. That article includes my own experiences with mindfulness and how it's helped me over the years. Right below that is a look at what research says about some other mind-body treatments.
Take care of yourself!

3 June 2015 Newsletter - Insecure, Low Pay Jobs To Stop ESA Claimants Watching Jeremy Kyle Plus Death Statistics May Never Be Seen

The boss of Britain’s largest welfare to work provider believes that claimants are better off in low paid, insecure temporary work “rather than sat at home watching Jeremy Kyle”.
He also argues that the government have to get the “people who are technically unfit to work, back to work” and believes that the appointment of Maximus to carry out employment and support allowance (ESA) medical assessments will lead to an extra 2.5 million people being sent to his company.
Death statistics and dangerous guides.
How many of those millions will end up being sanctioned and suffering a dramatic decline in their health – or even dying – as a result will probably never be known.
In fact, even the ESA death statistics that the government already holds may never be seen, now that the DWP have launched a last minute appeal against an order to publish them. If the DWP are determined not to release the figures, they can drag out the appeals process for a decade or more.
In reality, more lives may have been put at risk by sanctions than we realised, as it has now become clear that work programme providers have failed to follow guidelines that say they must have a face-to-face meeting with vulnerable ESA claimants before referring them for a sanction.
Further details of what providers must do will be in an updated version of our ESA sanctions guide, which will be in the members’ area by Monday.
There will also be updated versions of our ESA guides available from Monday. These will take account of new and –in our view – dangerous guidance issued to decision makers on how to take into account the effects of work-related activities when making submissions about the vital ‘substantial risk’ regulations. These regulations are one of the most important routes into the support group, especially for claimants with mental health conditions.

Bring greater awareness of Fibromyalgia to the British public

Please sign this petition.
Fibromyalgia is an incurable, often degenerative, life limiting condition and sufferers often find that a lack of awareness increases their suffering. For this reason we would like the British broadcasters to feature stories and information on Fibromyalgia more frequently to raise awareness.

10 Causes Of Fibromyalgia Your Doctor May Not Know About

It's estimated that fibromyalgia affects approximately 10 million people in the United States. Fibromyalgia is classically characterized by chronic pain, particularly muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog or cognitive impairment, depression and painful tender points throughout the body.
Conventional medicine has yet to uncover the cause of fibromyalgia and only offers management of symptoms through pain medications and antidepressants.
Functional medicine, on the other hand, looks to find the root cause of fibromyalgia and other chronic diseases, treating the problem at the root level to restore the patient to health. As a functional medicine physician, I've helped many patients recover from fibromyalgia.  Below are the top ten root causes of fibromyalgia I see in my clinic.

By the time this magazine is published May will be over and all the events will be complete. From a personal point of view I am sure this year has held more promise, there have been more events than ever before. There have been more Facebook postings than previous years. Awareness is growing. Those with FM/ME/CFS are more aware that it is in our hands to do something to help raise  awareness in the non FM community.

Fibromyalgia and Magnesium Treatments

While there isn’t a cure for fibromyalgia, there are many treatments that can help to relieve the symptoms of the debilitating condition. Patients suffer with pain, lack of energy, sleep disorders, joint pain, muscle pain and more when they have fibromyalgia. Many doctors prescribe medications that are designed to help control the flare ups and provide some pain relief.
Medications may include corticosteroids, NSAIDS and even good old fashioned acetaminophen. Many people find great relief from such medications, others however, may find that these treatments aren’t working for them at all.
The truth is, there are as many treatments as there are individuals. Fibromyalgia and magnesium treatments are one alternative therapy that many people are trying and with good results.

Coping with Chronic Pain and Depression, By: Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead, LMFT, ACRPS, CADC-II

The Role of Depression
Many people with chronic pain frequently become depressed due to living with under treated or mistreated pain symptoms.
Living with chronic pain over a long period of time often creates problems with a person’s thinking and emotions; their behavior can become irrational or dysfunctional and often mismanage their feelings. As a result, they have urges to act out in self-defeating, impulsive or compulsive behaviors in order to cope with their depression which impacts all their relationships.

Fibromyalgia Bad: Fibromyalgia with Migraine – Really Bad

There’s something about migraines and fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Migraines aren’t usually talked about as major comorbid disorders with these diseases but recent studies suggest, however, that migraine may be one of the most, if not the most, common comorbid disorder for both of these illnesses.  These studies – most of them fairly small – have suggested that from 20-30% of people with FM and as many of 80% of people with chronic fatigue syndrome may experience migraines. Tension type headaches commonly co-occur with migraines in FM and ME/CFS One study suggested that most people with ME/CFS, FM and/or GWI who experience tension headaches (dull head pain, pressure around the forehead, tenderness around the forehead and scalp) also experience migraines. Frequent tension headaches alone can induce an overall hypersensitivity to pain.

ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia As Functionally Impairing As Major Diseases in Medical World

The term functionally somatic syndrome does not have a great history. A 1999 Annals of Internal Medicine article stated that one of the factors perpetuating FSS’s like ME/CFS, GWS and FM is “the belief that one has a serious disease”.  Times have changed, though. The 2015 study cited below is a “functional somatic syndrome” study that aimed to prove that FSS’s are, in fact, serious disorders. Compared to the “well-defined medical diseases” the FSS’s are mysteries in the medical world. It simply describes FSS’s such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome as being disorders without “sufficient explanatory pathology”.

Juvenile Fibromyalgia

Definition
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep and mood issues.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.
Fibromyalgia is commonly thought of as a condition that affects adults. However, fibromyalgia also occurs in children and adolescents. Estimates suggest that juvenile-onset fibromyalgia affects 2 to 6 percent of school children, mostly adolescent girls. It is most commonly diagnosed between ages 13 and 15.
