Fibromyalgia Awareness Day Countdown
Four weeks to go before Fibromyalgia Awareness Day!

The brain child of Sally Redmond - Message from Gemma Flood
Sally Redmond from Dublin, Ireland came up with a novel idea to raise awareness and make money at the same time for Fibromyalgia.  She put a picture of herself on our Awareness Page -   Fibromyalgia Awareness and Advocacy Forum Ireland. She bedecked herself in purple and challenged people to do the same.  She challenged fellow sufferers and her friends.  Those who  complied with the challenge had to pay 2 euro to the paypal  fibromybook@gmail.com or send stamps. Stamps are vital to us for keeping awareness going, Not alone are we getting the message out there but having some fun at the same time.  Thanks Sally from all of us.  Gemma xxxxx

Is Drinking Cold Water Bad For You?

Do you like to drink cold water to quench your thirst? There are many people just like you who prefer to drink cold water since they find it tastier and better than hot tea or water, room temperature or tap water, and vegetables and fruit juices. But in reality, cold water is not better than all of these drinks. In fact, it is actually bad for our health.

SURVIVING TO THRIVING - By: Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead, LMFT, ACRPS, CADC-II

In order for a person to effectively manage a chronic pain condition it is very important to understand exactly what type of pain they are experiencing. People will be more successful by learning as much about their pain as possible, as well as what constitutes safe and effective chronic pain management. There are many self-directed ways that people can do this.Psychological
When people are in pain they experience both physical and psychological symptoms. To understand the language of pain, we must learn to listen to how the pain echoes and reverberates between the physical, psychological, social and spiritual dimensions of the human condition. Pain is truly a total human experience that affects all aspects of human functioning.
The psychological symptoms include both cognitive (thinking changes) and emotional (uncomfortable feelings) which when left unattended, often lead to suffering. Most people are not able to differentiate between the physical and psychological symptoms of their pain condition. All they know is “I hurt.” To effectively manage their pain, people need to understand all aspects of their pain condition – physiological, psychological, and emotional.

Can A Detox Help Relieve Fibromyalgia Symptoms?

After years of being tormented by conventional doctors over the cause of my fibromyalgia symptoms, I eventually sought the advice of a holistic pain specialist. Within 20 minutes of describing my daily struggle with my symptoms, she diagnosed me with fibromyalgia. It was a moment of mixed emotions.
On one hand I was elated, because I was so relieved to have a name for what I was going through. On the other hand, she proceeded to inform me that the daily pain wasn’t going away anytime soon. It cemented in my mind the harsh reality that I was sick… and there was no pill or miracle cure that could fix me.

20 Things You Shouldn't Do Before Bed

Sneaky sleep saboteurs
Getting a good night's sleep is important for your mood, your energy levels, and your overall health. It's also dependent on what you do during the day—how much physical activity you get, what you eat and drink, and how mentally stimulated you are— especially in the hours before you crawl into bed.
"When people suffer from insomnia or other sleep issues, it's often because of something they're doing, probably unintentionally, when they should be preparing for rest," says Michael Grandner, PhD, a psychiatry instructor and member of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine Program at the University of Pennsylvania. Here are 20 things you might want to avoid at night, especially if you're suffering from a lack of shuteye.

“Clean Energy”: Can a Ketogenic Diet Help with ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia?

Being a ME/CFS patient in remission is a deeply humbling experience. Even though I think I have the illness under my thumb, there’s no doubt that something could happen to quickly turn the tables the other way. I was reminded of this back in January. First came the flu, with laryngitis so severe I could no longer teach my classes (or record podcast episodes!). Then came pneumonia. After 4 weeks came a secondary cold, then another. Next a rib strain so severe from coughing, it sent me to the ER because I was certain I had a fracture. My immune system was hurting, and musculoskeletal injuries frequently set me into relapse because of the cytokine storm. By late February I was getting better. But my crushing fatigue was back, my sleep was disturbed, my muscles were weak. I was having trouble getting around on the subway. Unfortunately, I was feeling like a ME/CFS patient again.

“Proto-Fibromyalgia” Causing Major Distress

Fibromyalgia is considered the quintessential pain syndrome. The pain is unrelenting, difficult to treat and isn’t caused by some obvious structural defect. . A Michigan research group following arthritis patients undergoing hip or knee replacement or remodeling has found you don’t need to have full-blown fibromyalgia to have major pain problems – you just need to have something like it. Like others in the field, they noticed that surgical outcomes often do not track what they see on their scans. Some patients with major structural problems are in less pain than patients with minor structural problems. Some patients with apparently successful surgeries aren’t have successful outcomes. Even after alleviating their structural problems some patients pain levels are still so high that their surgeries declared failures. Something other than knee or hip damage is impacting these patients. That something appears to be a ‘proto-fibromyalgia’ state; not full-blown fibromyalgia but a lesser form of it.

This Is What Sugar Does To Your Brain

We know that too much sugar is bad for our waistlines and our heart health, but now there's mounting evidence that high levels of sugar consumption can also have a negative effect on brain health -- from cognitive function to psychological wellbeing.
While sugar is nothing to be too concerned about in small quantities, most of us are simply eating too much of it. The sweet stuff -- which also goes by names like glucose, fructose, honey and corn syrup -- is found in 74 percent of packaged foods in our supermarkets. And while the Word Health Organization recommends that only 5 percent of daily caloric intake come from sugar, the typical American diet is comprised of 13 percent calories from sugar.
“Many Americans eat about five times the amount of sugar they should consume,”

What To Do When You Can't... Quite... Go

Everybody poops, but not everybody poops well: A recent study published in The American Journal of Gastroenterology found that the number of people arriving at hospital emergency rooms for constipation is on the rise.
Depending on one's definition of constipation, the condition can affect between 12 and 19 percent of the population and cost an  estimated $1.6 billion in emergency room visits in 2011. A 2002 study also found that Americans spend about $800 million a year on laxatives.
But beyond the numbers, constipation is a very real problem that almost everyone will experience at some point in their lives -- whether it’s brought on by travel stress, unfamiliar surroundings, medication, age or a changing lifestyle and diet. Dr. William Chey, a professor of medicine at the University of Michigan and co-editor-in-chief of the journal that published the study, believes that the U.S. is going to see these numbers rise even more as the population ages. In part this is because the  condition might be exacerbated by aging colons, as well as lifestyle changes linked to being elderly: medications, less physical activity and more prepared or processed foods.

Are Grains the Enemy?

With the paleo diet recently taking headlines amongst the health conscious, grain-free diets have certainly become very
popular. But why do some individuals consider grains to be so bad for us? We have been consuming these grains for thousands of years, so surely they are fine to eat? The truth about grains, however, is not so simple.

The Healing Properties of Flax Seed

Flax seed is a natural supplement that individuals add to their diets to treat and prevent a variety of chronic health conditions. Many people add flax seed to juice, hot cereal, or yogurt. You can also mix it into batter for muffins, cookies, and breads prior to baking.
To get optimal healing benefits of flax seed, it’s important to grind it first. Invest in a small coffee grinder to grind it just prior to adding it to your food or drink. Although it may be a time saver, avoid buying packaged flax mill because it loses some of its health benefits in the packaging due to oxidation.

A personal  note from Vicky

I hope you had a good Easter break and were able to relax.
We haven’t exactly been relaxing! Hopefully by today we will have cycled half way up the length of Vietnam.  Todays itinerary says we will have cycled to Xuan Thieu alongside the beaches of Danang and be driven up to the lofty heights of Hai Van (Sea Cloud) Pass.  They say ‘this stunningly scenic region once marked the boundary between Vietnam and Champa Kingdom to the south and, as we reach the summit the panoramas before us are spectacular.’  Total distance cycled today 48 miles!
