FMS eNews 07/02/15

On Monday of this week my husband attended East Surrey Hospital for an elective angiogram which diagnosed arterial stenosis resulting in his having two stents inserted into blocked arteries.  It has been quite traumatic as it was a critical situation.  However, the outcome was good, so he should be able to enjoy a few more years of life.  He will be 82 later this month.

Standing Clear: Drug Stops Orthostatic Intolerance in ME/CFS In Lab – Next Steps

Few healthy people give any thought at all to standing up, but for a subset of people with chronic fatigue syndrome standing up is an act that’s fraught with peril.  Whether their hearts start racing (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) and/or their breathing does (postural hyperventilation) standing often leaves them fatigued, loopy, cognitively impaired and out of it. If your heart beats too fast it doesn’t have time to fill with enough blood to feed the brain. If you breathe too fast your CO2 levels tank producing hypocapnia. Hypocapnia causes the blood vessels in your brain to narrow (vasoconstrict), impeding blood flows to the brain causing dizziness, anxiety and other symptoms. It also causes alkalosis, muscle cramps and pins and needles sensations.

FDA Approval of MS Drug Puts Ampligen Back In Play
Deja Vu?
“I just try and not think about it, because it gets me furious” multiple sclerosis patient

The story sounds eerily similar. Citing questions regarding study quality and side effects, the FDA refuses to approve a drug for a condition for which few or no effective drugs exist. After hearing story after story of patients who have been dramatically helped by the drug, the patient community goes ballistic. They send letters and emails and gather 10,000 signatures on a petition asking the FDA to change their decision. They argue they should be allowed to determine whether they want to accept the risk that comes with taking the drug.

Dreaming of a Good Night's Sleep? By Karen Lee Richards

Chronic insomnia is a serious problem for many people. According to the National Sleep Foundation, 22% of Americans experience insomnia every or almost every night. For people who have fibromyalgia or ME/CFS, that percentage is significantly higher. More than 75% of people diagnosed with FM and approximately 60% of those with ME/CFS have difficulty falling asleep,  staying asleep and/or awakening from sleep feeling rested and refreshed.
ProHealth founder, Rich Carson, is one of those people. Tired of fighting the nightly battle for sleep, he set out to develop a product that would help not only himself, but also the millions of others like him for whom sleep remains just a dream. Rich tells his story. . . .

Reduce Inflammation Naturally with Nature’s Pac Man - by Suzy Cohen on January 31, 2015

Have you ever had a sore throat, been stung by a bee, or twisted your ankle?
Do you have arthritis, back pain or headaches?
Whenever you are in pain, even post-surgical pain, your body makes compounds in response to the injury which cause temporary redness, heat, swelling, and pain. Then naturally produced enzymes in your body eat up these inflammatory compounds, and that is when you notice the swelling goes down, the pain is relieved and the redness or stiffness recedes.

Chronic pain not only hurts, it also causes isolation and depression. But there’s hope.

Chronic pain affects more people than cancer, diabetes, heart attack and stroke combined. The Institute of Medicine estimates there are more than 100 million sufferers in the United States, costing the nation as much as $635 billion a year in medical treatment and lost productivity.
It’s even the focus of a new movie: “Cake,” starring Jennifer Anniston as a woman struggling with chronic pain, is scheduled for release Jan. 23.
Chronic pain can be devastating, and a challenge to treat. As a mental health counselor, I have seen it damage productive lives and tear families apart.
Pain sufferers often are misdiagnosed, misunderstood and miserable. Their friends and family can become worn out from listening to complaints. Their identities may be significantly altered because they cannot engage in activities they once enjoyed. Doctors get frustrated by the inability to provide a cure.

Slideshow: A Visual Guide to Fibromyalgia

1. What Is Fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition that affects about 5 million Americans. Doctors diagnose fibromyalgia based on a patient's symptoms and physical exam. Patients experience pain and stiffness in the muscles, but there are no measurable findings on X-rays or most lab tests. While fibromyalgia does not damage the joints or organs, the constant aches and fatigue can have a significant impact on daily life.

A personal  note from Vicky

Thank you to Barry for showing how we should leave our mats at the end of class ;-).  The picture shows some of the ‘toys’ we use in class to make exercises more interesting!
By the time you get this I should have finished my cleanse.  I’m on a 14 day programme run by a fellow fitpro and nutritionalist Jackie Ashdown.  Another local instructor  Debbie Beling is supporting clients through a 28 day programme. I do believe that in a toxic world it is a good idea to eat clean and bring the diet back down to basics every now and then. The upside of this is feeling better and losing weight which for me had crept up after Christmas.
