At last!  My new bathroom is completed.  For the last week we have been back in our own bedroom, with the bathroom still lacking a washbasin!  But not any more. It was a joy, this morning, to use the walk-in shower/bath with rising seat and spa jets.  Sheer indulgence, I know, but a great 80th birthday reward!!

Can We Do the Things We Want to Do?

We've all had to give up things that we want in our lives because of our illnesses. But how much do we have to lose? Can we find ways to keep some of it?
We each have to answer that for ourselves, based on our symptoms and their severity.
This week, we focus is on ideas for re-claiming some of those things by adapting them to better suit us. And I'm not talking about the things that have to get done -- these are the things we choose to do because they enrich our lives.
Take care of yourself!

How A Traumatic Brain Injury Can Lead To Fibromyalgia

Any brain injury can result in garbled or mixed signals to the various centers in the body and thus result in a misdiagnosed case of fibromyalgia. The real question is this, “Is fibromyalgia a result of a brain injury or another condition?”

Doctors are divided on their beliefs as to the possibility of fibromyalgia being related to a brain injury. .
Since the brain controls our pain sensors many believe that fibromyalgia could be a direct result of a brain injury. Again, even a mild bump to the head can cause injury, even if the bump barely hurt.

13 Homemade Bread Recipes – Never Buy Bread Again

We found an awesome page full of home-made bread recipes, courtesy of our friends over at Common Sense Homesteading.
If you have never made your own bread – you should give it a go! Not only is making bread a quintessential “off grid skill”, there’s nothing quite like the aroma and taste of bread when it is super-fresh from the oven. These 13 recipes will keep you ‘spoilt for choice’ with all the variety you need to persuade you to skip the store and stay home on the ranch.
Another thing about making your own bread – that is actually pretty important from a health point of view – is that you get to control exactly what goes into it. This might turn out to be a big deal in the modern age of weird additives sneaking their way into food. Why wait for the “powers that be” to get round to banning some weird chemical after we have all been guinea pigs?
They only ever seem to do so after the damage has been done… for example Azodicarbonamide, known by the E number E927, is considered a respiratory sensitizer and has been banned in the EU – but is still in use in the USA as a flour additive!

The Age of Aspartame May Be Coming To An End As More Health Risks Are Confirmed

Just because something is touted as “sugar free”, does it mean it’s healthy? Recent studies have shown that not only does artificial sweetener intake have an association with diabetes, it also increases the risk for heart, kidney, and brain damage. [2]
Aspartame was an accidental discovery by the G.D. Searle Company (a pharmaceutical company) back in 1969, reporting that aspartame was an “organic compound with a profound sucrose like taste”. In the 1970s, several studies were done on aspartame revealing truly terrifying results. G.D. Searle submitted false results to the FDA because the studies showed that aspartame intake caused death and grand mal seizures in their test subjects (infant monkeys). Other studies revealed that aspartame caused neurotoxicity and brain damage. Despite being banned twice by the FDA, aspartame is once again legal and being consumed by potentially millions of people all over the world.

Fibromyalgia and Cognitive Problems

Managing Cognitive Fatigue
Fibromyalgia and Cognitive ProblemsPain is generally considered the primary symptom of fibromyalgia, but I feel there is another one equal to, if not worse than, pain. That symptom is fatigue.
Now I know everyone has different levels of pain, fatigue, and all the other symptoms. So this may vary from person to person.
But the thing about pain is that to a certain extent you can push through it and still get things done. There are pain medicines that can help get rid of, or at least curb, the amount of pain that we feel. There are topical ointments and lotions that help with pain. Heat and/or cold can help with pain.
But what helps fatigue?

Coping With Fibromyalgia Morning Stiffness

The Daily Struggle of Morning Stiffness
Coping With Fibromyalgia Morning StiffnessIt is another day when my schedule demands that my feet hit the ground running, when in fact walking is a chore. I know I am not alone because 90% of those suffering from fibromyalgia experience frequent and chronic morning pain and stiffness.
Fibromyalgia morning stiffness is exacerbated by pain, fatigue and sleep disturbances, and is among the top complaints of FM sufferers. Although doctors tend to list it as a “minor symptom,” those of us who deal with it on a regular basis understand that it is anything but “minor” and in fact, is often debilitating. It can be a deciding factor to a person’s lifestyle when the ability to “get going” in the morning is severely hindered.

How Fibromyalgia Impacts Your Family

We Are Not the Only Ones Who Are Suffering
How Fibromyalgia Impacts Your FamilyWhen you are suffering, when you are in pain, when you walk around exhausted all the time, it is very easy to get wrapped up in yourself and your own suffering.
It is easy to center your thinking on how your life has been affected by fibromyalgia – this is completely normal human behavior. But I feel it is important to remember that we are not the only ones who are suffering.
Our family and our loved ones are also very much affected by this terrible illness. They often have to make sacrifices to help us. They suffer because we suffer. It would be unhealthy for our relationships with them to become consumed with our own suffering, and not recognize theirs.

Testing Exercise Limits; Benefits of Mindfulness

3 June 2015 Newsletter - Insecure, Low Pay Jobs To Stop ESA Claimants Watching Jeremy Kyle Plus Death Statistics May Never Be Seen

The boss of Britain’s largest welfare to work provider believes that claimants are better off in low paid, insecure temporary work “rather than sat at home watching Jeremy Kyle”.
He also argues that the government have to get the “people who are technically unfit to work, back to work” and believes that the appointment of Maximus to carry out employment and support allowance (ESA) medical assessments will lead to an extra 2.5 million people being sent to his company.
Death statistics and dangerous guides.
How many of those millions will end up being sanctioned and suffering a dramatic decline in their health – or even dying – as a result will probably never be known.
In fact, even the ESA death statistics that the government already holds may never be seen, now that the DWP have launched a last minute appeal against an order to publish them. If the DWP are determined not to release the figures, they can drag out the appeals process for a decade or more.
In reality, more lives may have been put at risk by sanctions than we realised, as it has now become clear that work programme providers have failed to follow guidelines that say they must have a face-to-face meeting with vulnerable ESA claimants before referring them for a sanction.
Further details of what providers must do will be in an updated version of our ESA sanctions guide, which will be in the members’ area by Monday.
There will also be updated versions of our ESA guides available from Monday. These will take account of new and –in our view – dangerous guidance issued to decision makers on how to take into account the effects of work-related activities when making submissions about the vital ‘substantial risk’ regulations. These regulations are one of the most important routes into the support group, especially for claimants with mental health conditions.

10 Causes Of Fibromyalgia Your Doctor May Not Know About

It's estimated that fibromyalgia affects approximately 10 million people in the United States. Fibromyalgia is classically characterized by chronic pain, particularly muscle pain, fatigue, sleep disturbances, brain fog or cognitive impairment, depression and painful tender points throughout the body.
Conventional medicine has yet to uncover the cause of fibromyalgia and only offers management of symptoms through pain medications and antidepressants.
Functional medicine, on the other hand, looks to find the root cause of fibromyalgia and other chronic diseases, treating the problem at the root level to restore the patient to health. As a functional medicine physician, I've helped many patients recover from fibromyalgia.  Below are the top ten root causes of fibromyalgia I see in my clinic.

Fibromyalgia and Magnesium Treatments

While there isn’t a cure for fibromyalgia, there are many treatments that can help to relieve the symptoms of the debilitating condition. Patients suffer with pain, lack of energy, sleep disorders, joint pain, muscle pain and more when they have fibromyalgia. Many doctors prescribe medications that are designed to help control the flare ups and provide some pain relief.
Medications may include corticosteroids, NSAIDS and even good old fashioned acetaminophen. Many people find great relief from such medications, others however, may find that these treatments aren’t working for them at all.
The truth is, there are as many treatments as there are individuals. Fibromyalgia and magnesium treatments are one alternative therapy that many people are trying and with good results.

Coping with Chronic Pain and Depression, By: Dr. Stephen F. Grinstead, LMFT, ACRPS, CADC-II

The Role of Depression
Many people with chronic pain frequently become depressed due to living with under treated or mistreated pain symptoms.
Living with chronic pain over a long period of time often creates problems with a person’s thinking and emotions; their behavior can become irrational or dysfunctional and often mismanage their feelings. As a result, they have urges to act out in self-defeating, impulsive or compulsive behaviors in order to cope with their depression which impacts all their relationships.

Fibromyalgia Bad: Fibromyalgia with Migraine – Really Bad

There’s something about migraines and fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Migraines aren’t usually talked about as major comorbid disorders with these diseases but recent studies suggest, however, that migraine may be one of the most, if not the most, common comorbid disorder for both of these illnesses.  These studies – most of them fairly small – have suggested that from 20-30% of people with FM and as many of 80% of people with chronic fatigue syndrome may experience migraines. Tension type headaches commonly co-occur with migraines in FM and ME/CFS One study suggested that most people with ME/CFS, FM and/or GWI who experience tension headaches (dull head pain, pressure around the forehead, tenderness around the forehead and scalp) also experience migraines. Frequent tension headaches alone can induce an overall hypersensitivity to pain.

ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia As Functionally Impairing As Major Diseases in Medical World

The term functionally somatic syndrome does not have a great history. A 1999 Annals of Internal Medicine article stated that one of the factors perpetuating FSS’s like ME/CFS, GWS and FM is “the belief that one has a serious disease”.  Times have changed, though. The 2015 study cited below is a “functional somatic syndrome” study that aimed to prove that FSS’s are, in fact, serious disorders. Compared to the “well-defined medical diseases” the FSS’s are mysteries in the medical world. It simply describes FSS’s such as chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome as being disorders without “sufficient explanatory pathology”.

Juvenile Fibromyalgia

Definition
Fibromyalgia is a disorder characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep and mood issues.
Researchers believe that fibromyalgia amplifies painful sensations by affecting the way your brain processes pain signals.
Fibromyalgia is commonly thought of as a condition that affects adults. However, fibromyalgia also occurs in children and adolescents. Estimates suggest that juvenile-onset fibromyalgia affects 2 to 6 percent of school children, mostly adolescent girls. It is most commonly diagnosed between ages 13 and 15.

N.B. The links on this my FMS eNews blog are in the BROWN text, usually in the title of each article but occasionally elsewhere too. Some titles have no links in which case the title is in PURPLE like the dividers.  This blog gives just a taster of each article which can be viewed in full through its link.  If you have any navigation problems, let me know.

I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources. Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
Wordz for the Week are from ‘Wordz for the Day’ by Donnie Kuhn, Sr. who died in May 2011.
This eNews is my personal offering to fibromyalgia sufferers and their carers and is not related to any other organisation or charity.
If you don’t already get reminders when each new FMS eNews is posted, please send an email to fmsstella@gmail.com and you will be added to the emailing list.
