Special Edition for International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day 12th May 2014

Officially it's ME/CFS/FM Awareness Day, but each condition claims it for itself!  The more awareness that can be raised, the better for all three.

In this issue you will find various versions of the origin and purpose of having this special day but all agree that it was Florence Nightingale's birthday. There are lots of other sites, blogs and forums trying to raise awareness.
Please pass on this URL

to ALL your contacts to help them understand too. Put it on FaceBook, Twitter and anywhere else you have connections.  Thank you!

Fibromyalgia Awareness Day 2014

What’s fibromyalgia awareness all about? And, do we really need more of it?
Asking this readership to be aware of fibromyalgia is like asking a flame to be aware of its heat.
Fibromyalgia is with us every waking moment (and in many pseudo-sleeping moments as well). We think about fibromyalgia as we get up in the morning, as we prepare meals, and as we function throughout the day. It’s not typically far from our awareness.
Fibro newbies may require more information, but what about the rest of society?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Fibromyalgia and Florence Nightingale

“There is no part of my life, upon which I can look back without pain”, Florence Nightingale
To-day, May 12th is International Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. It is also the birth date of Florence Nightingale, born May 12, 1820.
In 1986 I decided that it was time to develop a Canadian Association for the History of Nursing and began the work with a colleague from Ontario, Dr. Margaret Allemang, of establishing such an Association. For all the subsequent years we have had either a national or international conference and every year without fail, someone mentions Florence Nightingale. It is either in a research paper, or some kind of visual display, or perhaps just a passing comment, for who better to honour than the founder of modern day nursing?

<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

“Apprehension, uncertainty, waiting, expectation, fear of surprise, do a patient more harm than any exertion” Florence Nightingale

This is a very special issue for our newsletter because it is Fibromyalgia Awareness Day. The 12th of May, being Florence Nightingale birthday, and because she may have suffered from fibromyalgia, it is the Fibromyalgia Day.
But it goes further than that. She was vociferous and un-fatigable in pursuing the right of patients. She deranged the conservatism of the society of her time and was considered by many as a pest. They tried everything to keep her quiet but even honors did not shut her down (nowadays, many doctors and nurses are happy to stay quiet in exchange of honors or money).
(URL misplaced - apologies!)

ME/CFS & Fibromyalgia International Awareness Day – How It All Began

May 12th was designated as ME/CFS & Fibromyalgia International Awareness day back in 1993, 16 years ago (now 21 years ago).  The particular date of May 12th was chosen to honor the birthdate of Florence Nightingale, the English army nurse who inspired the founding of the International Red Cross. Florence Nightingale became chronically ill in her mid-thirties with an illness like ME/CFS (and who knows – maybe it was!) and she spent the remainder of her life (over 50 years) practically bedridden.
Even though Florence was suffering from a debilitating illness, she still managed to become the founder of the world’s first School of Nursing. Since then much has happened in the way of progress to help the millions of ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia sufferers, but there is still much more that needs to be done.

Florence Nightingale and ME Awareness Day

Although it cannot be truly confirmed, it is very interesting to note that it is believed Florence Nightingale had CFS/ME or fibromyalgia.
I’ve only recently found this out while researching information for this blog. The 12thMay is ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia awareness day – and it was actually chosen because it was Nightingale’s birthday. After returning back from the Crimean War, the famous nurse became bed-ridden and found it too tiring to talk to more than one visitor at a time. However, she still completed a great amount of work from her bed – including helping with the reform of public health.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my FMS eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.
Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.

I hate housework!  Not that I don't like the place to be clean and tidy, but weilding the necessary tools is tiring, arm aching and back breaking!  So I do as little as possible. Shock horror!!??

Just before visitors are expected is the most likely time you will see me with even a duster in my hand!  Does it matter?  Not really.  My space, time and place are my own.  If I choose to be working on the computer, knitting, watching TV or listening to an audio book (I don't actually READ books any more) then I will do so without a guilty conscience.

The ‘Body’ is Back in Fibromyalgia - Small Nerve Fiber Damage Suggests The Pain Begins There

The ‘word’ on Fibromyalgia, which was originally proposed to be a disorder of the muscles, has been that it’s a disorder of the central nervous system. Studies have found that both the pain-producing and the pain-inhibiting sides of the central nervous system in Fibromyalgia are clearly dysregulated. These are important findings, but they’re not the whole story. You wouldn’t know that from overviews of the disorder on the web where the central nervous system paradigm dominates.

Coping with ME/CFS Will Always Be Hard – But There Are Ways to Make it a Little Easier

Insight and Practice …. A Lot of Practice We are all waiting for effective treatment for ME/CFS, but since we are not getting much help from those who could make headway in that issue (the government and its agencies, research funding bodies, the medical community), in the meantime we have to rely on coping. I know Cort loves guest posts on coping so here’s my contribution.  While I still must say I have an almost unbearable life with severe ME/CFS, some years into the illness I did manage to reach a degree of acceptance – at least much more than at the beginning. Through this decade of severe ME/CFS, with 24-7 immense pain and massive suffering, I think it has rescued me from going completely crazy.

How to Prove to Your Doctor You’ve Got Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) And Are Not Just Depressed

Many people with ME/CFS and FM are mistakenly diagnosed with depression first] Wrong diagnoses hurt. They lead doctors to prescribe treatments that don’t work and may even be harmful (exercise!) and they keep doctors from prescribing treatments that do work.  They waste patients’ money and, given the fact that the earlier a person is diagnosed with ME/CFS the better chance they have of improving their health, they contribute to poor health.  The fact that only from 15-20% of people in the U.S. with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome have been diagnosed with it suggests wrong diagnoses run rampant in this disorder. Of all the wrong diagnoses, being diagnosed with depression is surely the most common.

HOSPITAL CLOSURE CLAUSE: BRIEFING FOR LORDS

Baroness Finlay, a well-respected crossbench peer and doctor, has proposed an amendment to “clause 119” of the Care Bill. If enough Lords support her amendment, then it could be enough to stop Jeremy Hunt’s dangerous hospital closure clause from becoming law.

Earlier this week, 38 Degrees members chipped in enough money to fund a briefing which every Lord will receive. They’ll also be invited to a meeting where Baroness Finlay, along with legal experts, which will make the case for the amendment.

Your Top Tips for Surviving Life on Benefits

We’ve had well over 500 replies to our question about what advice you would give to people new to claiming benefits.

They cover issues as varied as where to shop, how to cook, what websites to use, where to get advice, how to cope with neighbours and the media’s hate campaign.
And the picture your suggestions paint is a very different one from the ugly distortions of the tabloids. Not a single mention of food banks. No suggestions about ways to afford flat screen TVs or cigarettes or alcohol.
Instead, your tips have an almost wartime spirit of defiance – a mixture of dig for victory and make-do and mend. Shining through them is a determination to survive without bitterness and without being ground down by adversity.
Above all, they demonstrate the reality of life on benefits that politicians, bankers and the media are desperate to keep hidden in order to make claimants the scapegoats for their own failings.
Having started this, we’re keen to keep it going. So, please add your own suggestions or comments if you haven’t already. You can use the Comments function on the page or email us at office@benefitsandwork.co.uk
We’ve highlighted the winning tips from last week’s competition in red.
Facebook users can also join in the conversation here.
And if you have a particularly pithy tip, you can even tweet it to us using #realbenefitstips

What has been happening with the weather?  One day it is beautifully bright, warm and sunny, and we feel that spring has truly sprung but then it's dull, cold and wet and we wonder if we ever left winter behind!

But then there are inevitable 'April Showers', so perhaps it's not so odd after all!  Is there a fibro analogy there?  One day we might be feeling 'good' then a flare hits and we are instantly 'bad'.  Variety is the spice of life, or so we are led to believe!

 Cholesterol

Norah Wickerson
This is not the 'baddie' we have being led to believe. It is essential for many very important functions -
  • Helps to make hormones like oestrogen and progesterone.
  • Helps to make stress hormones like adrenalin and cortisol.
  • Helps repair little tears and damage in cells and blood vessels.
  •  Forms part of the make up of the myelin sheath to protect nerves.
Most importantly it helps the body metabolize Vitamin D - vital to have optimal level of this in any chronic pain condition and problems with immune system and general health. I could argue that vitamin D is the most important vitamin, even though it is actually a hormone, as it does so much more than we previously were aware of.

There are several sources that produce the sweet taste many people crave without adding the calories most people are constantly trying to avoid. The important thing when trying to find a natural sweetener is to look for those that offer other benefits in addition to their sweet flavor.

Do People That Eat Margarine Really Know How It's Manufactured?

Polyunsaturated margarine became a major part of the Western diet and had overtaken butter in popularity in the mid-20th century. Despite their best efforts, the margarine lobby has failed to convince most people that their synthetic concoctions are healthy. So what is not obvious to most of the people who consume it? The manufacturing process of course, which is very similar to the way plastic is produced.

The Revolutionary "Good Fat" That Promotes Heart, Brain, Bone and Joint Health

Although we tend to think of fat as a "bad" thing, there are "good" fats that our body needs in order to function properly - in fact, we can't live without them.
Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are in that good fat group. Our body requires them in order to perform a number of different biological processes. EFAs must be ingested because the body does not manufacture them itself.

Innovative Nutrient Helps Repair Damaged Mitochondria & Reduce Fatigue up to 45%

Clinical trials have shown that NT Factor® can actually support the repair of damaged cell
membranes - in effect reducing the cells' biological age and restoring mitochondrial ability to generate energy.
This is true whether the reduced energy/fatigue is from an illness like ME/CFS or fibromyalgia, a side effect of chemotherapy, or simply a result of aging. Studies done with severely fatigued patients in each of these populations demonstrated that NT Factor can support reduction of fatigue levels by as much as 45 percent.(1-3)

Women and Fibromyalgia (sorry gentlemen!)

Many of the books on fibomyalgia tend to focus primarily on how to live with the condition. While there is value in this approach I believe we need more answers about why fibromyalgia is more common in women.
This is a book that will share twenty women’s stories of courage in living with this unbelievably common, debilitating and chronic condition. It is storytelling that allows voices to be heard that have often been silenced. During the process of interviewing the women I lived through an ‘aha’ moment that led me to a possible, and highly likely explanation about why fibromyalgia occurs primarily in women.

Fibromyalgia pain: Resetting the hypothalamus with diet, sleep, excercise

For fibromyalgia sufferers, increasing movement and re-setting the hypothalamus are critical first steps in reducing pain and restoring wellness.
Victims of fibromyalgia (FM) suffer from fluctuation in body temperatures, making them hot one minute and cold the next. The feeling can range from feverish to shivering.

Fibromyalgia understood: Sensitive receptors generate excessive pain

Studies conducted at Georgetown University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) by Daniel Clauw M.D. and Richard Gracely M.D. and supported by the National Fibromyalgia Research Association, the U.S. Army and NIH have revealed via advanced brain imaging that fibromyalgia is rooted in physical source and not generated by psychological issues.
Advanced technology called functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) clearly shows brain blood flow and neurological changes during painful episodes that affect victims of the disorder.

Fibromyalgia solved: Not in the mind, but a very real physical ailment

The National Biotechnology Information Center (NBIC) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) recently released the findings of research funded by grants from Eli Lilly Pharmaceuticals and Forest Laboratories that claim to have discovered a causative pathology (the science of cause and effect)  for fibromyalgia.
The cause of the disease escaped researchers for years. In fact, the condition was considered by many in the field of medicine as psychosomatic (in the mind) because of the variety of symptoms that could not be clinically pinned down and patient reporting was the primary criteria.

Thalasso-WHAT?

This is something that I am happy to see! There are a really good amount of studies going around concerning Fibromyalgia and treatments that help ease the pain. Compared to years past, it’s a marked improvement, to say the least! I even keep a specific Google Alert set up to e-mail me when any news article with the word “Fibromyalgia” pops up, so I can keep on top of the latest news, research and studies going on with it. This morning, when I checked my e-mail, an article about Thalassotherapy for Fibromyalgia came up!

Vicky's Newsletter

With the sun making a welcome appearance, I don’t seem to be the only one that has dusted off their bike this week.  I nearly came a cropper when my shoe, which clips onto the pedal, wouldn’t release but survived just.  The SPD clips are adjusted now to very lose! This picture was taken on the Worth Way which was a great place to get going again. (See below)

We have had a good break over Easter and caught up with family and friends.  I hope you found some time to do the same and enjoyed some ‘downtime’.

I am in the process of having some new flyers printed as I plan to put more classes on in early June.  The hall has become available on a Tuesday evening now and I plan to start a 7.30pm class that evening.  Please let me know if you would be interested in attending that class or know of anyone that might like a FREE trial in that class.
I hope you had a lovely break over Easter and didn’t eat too many of those eggs!
