5 Ways to Start the New Year Healthier

It’s a new year. It’s hard to believe because the old year went by so fast. I don’t know about you but I’m feeling it. I’m feeling the pace that I’ve been “running” at for the last year or so. That’s just what I’m focusing on as I begin this new year. Here are a few of the items on my checklist towards a healthier new year, perhaps they are on yours as well?
Read what Julie says about these:-

Book Review “Breakthrough for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, M.E. and Fibromyalgia.” by Judith Maizel with Fiona Adamson

The sub title is ‘How Neurobiology & Epigenetics Point the way to recovery’.
The book is reviewed by Jeanne Hambleton who says "In case you are wondering, neurosomatic illness is described as brain/body illness. The biology of the nervous system is neurobiology and epigenetics is biology resulting from external rather than genetic influences.

TECHNICIANS TRIAL NEW YEAR FITNESS SCHEME IN A LONDON GARAGE
From Jeanne Hambleton FMS Global News

The only reason I can think of for writing about this press release is my spare tyre, fitness, the play on words and the photo….
Getting rid of my spare tyre after all that Christmas pudding is the real reason I am writing this … but I do literally need to get my own spare tyre in shape.
SWNS Digital tells me Kwik Fit tyre technicians are trialling a fitness scheme in a London garage, which will actually help people lose their bodily ‘spare tyres’.
The crew has teamed up with a personal trainer to devise a system – Fit Kwik – using only car and van tyres.

Study: Fibromyalgia Sufferers Have Trouble Processing Sight, Sound, Touch

(New?) research provides even more evidence that people with fibromyalgia have a real pathology and that it may be linked to trouble processing everyday sights and sounds.
Fibromyalgia Sufferers Have Trouble Processing Sight, Sound, Touch
In a paper published earlier this month (September 24, 2014) in Arthritis & Rheumatology, Marina Lopez-Sola of the University of Colorado, Boulder, showed that people suffering from fibromyalgia are hypersensitive to everyday sensory stimulation. This includes sight and sound cues as well as touch. Fibromyalgia causes feelings of general malaise in addition to severe aches and pains.

Living with Fibromyalgia, Drugs Approved to Manage Pain

After meeting on the Internet in 1997, Lynne Matallana and Karen Lee Richards discovered they had a lot in common. They both had seen numerous doctors before being diagnosed with fibromyalgia, a chronic condition characterized by fatigue and widespread pain in muscles and joints. They both had trouble finding medical information and support for coping with the illness. Seven months after meeting, they started gathering with five other people with fibromyalgia who also wanted to bring awareness to the issue.
“We called ourselves ‘the pillow posse’ because we would meet and have our pillows to support our aching bodies,” Matallana says. Those gatherings grew into the National Fibromyalgia Association (NFA), an organization that now provides support, research information, medical education, and messages of hope to millions.

New Israeli Treatment For Fibromyalgia Helped 100% Of Sufferers In New Study

A clinical trial involving women diagnosed with fibromyalgia showed the painful condition improved in every one of the 48 who completed two months of hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Brain scans of the women before and after treatment gave credence to the theory that abnormal conditions in pain-related areas of the brain may be responsible for the syndrome.

My first duty in 2016 is to wish all my readers a very Happy New Year. It's hard to realise that 2015 has now gone and we have 2016 to look forward to and to cope with as best we can.  Find as many coping strategies as you can, and let us all know about them. You can reply in the 'Post a Comment' section at the end of this page, email me fmsstella@gmail.com  or leave a message on Facebook
Although I didn't publish a blog last week I was collecting items for this week. This week I have not been able to do as much as I would have liked.  I don't know if it's a fibro flare, flu, a cold, or a virus, but I have not been feeling good at all.  I can't blame it on Christmas because I was waited on hand and foot by my wonderful daughter.  All she would allow me to do was to cut up some carrots, and that wasn't exactly taxing!  I did rally enough on Tuesday to help her and her husband celebrate their 30th wedding anniversary - and that was in a hotel! Christine is in the first group from WORDz for the WEEK, and I am proud to give her the credit.

Fibromyalgia: Your daily diet, the problem areas & healthy changes

It is often tricky for fibromyalgia sufferers to get a diagnosis, as common inflammatory markers may be absent and there is frequently no observable damage or deformity to any of the areas that are painful.
Adding to the confusion when trying to reach a diagnosis is the fact that fibromyalgia is a syndrome encompassing a range of symptoms that not every sufferer will experience. Pain is common to all, but fatigue, sleeping disturbances and digestive complaints are present in varying combinations.

When you are dealing with the symptoms and issues that often come alongside fibromyalgia, you may be in a situation where you are fighting off the muscle spasms that make it even more uncomfortable.

HOW TO USE MEDICAL MARIJUANA WITHOUT GETTING HIGH

Hi everyone! New post today! NationalPainReport.com recently published my story, “How to Use Medical Marijuana without Getting High.” There's been a lot of media coverage lately about using medical marijuana for fibromyalgia, so I thought some of you might be interested in reading it.
The research may be slim, but there are plenty of anecdotal accounts indicating marijuana can be effective at reducing fibromyalgia pain. Visit any online fibromyalgia support group, and you’ll find more than a handful of pioneering members who have sworn off pharmaceuticals and instead toke up regularly for pain relief and better sleep.
But if you’ve never tried marijuana before, the idea of using it – even for medicinal purposes – can be scary and more than a little overwhelming.

Naltrexone “changed life” of fibromyalgia patient

Janice Hollander
My regular readers know I’m a big fan of using low dose naltrexone for fibromyalgia. I recently had the opportunity to write about LDN and how it’s becoming an emerging fibromyalgia treatment for Pain News Network. The story includes interviews with Jarred Younger, the researcher who conducted the first two LDN/fibromyalgia studies at Stanford University and Linda Elsegood, founder of the LDN Research Trust. I’m reprinting the story here with Pain News Network’s
permission.
The pain in Janice Hollander’s legs was so excruciating that she wanted to cut them off. Diagnosed with fibromyalgia in 2013, she’d progressed through the normal litany of prescription drugs doled out by physicians – Lyrica, Cymbalta, gabapentin, muscle relaxers and narcotics – all without finding relief.
Then she happened to catch an episode of the Dr. Oz Show where a guest discussed using low-dose naltrexone (LDN) as a treatment for chronic pain. A few days later, she convinced her doctor to write a prescription and took her first dose of LDN.

Is It True That The Weather Affects Fibromyalgia Symptoms?

. . . . Many people who suffer from fibromyalgia also report experiencing a difference in pain levels as the weather changes.
According to a study by Ercolie Bossema, Ph.D. from Utrecht University in the Netherlands, “Many fibromyalgia patients report that certain weather conditions seem to aggravate their symptoms.” These changing weather conditions include precipitation, sunshine, and temperature.

Magnetic Stimulation May Relieve Mental Symptoms of Fibromyalgia

The technique may provide a safe, easy, and noninvasive way to treat the social and emotional symptoms of the disease.
A form of brain-stimulation therapy called repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) may help relieve some of the non-pain symptoms of fibromyalgia, including emotional distress, and improve overall quality of life for patients living with the disease, according to a new study published in the journal Neurology.

New drugs for Fibromyalgia that show promise for sleep improvement & pain reduction

A new drug being tested in clinical trials to treat fibromyalgia, called Tonmya, is showing promise for sleep improvement and pain reduction.
Tonmya is being evaluated in the 500-patient Phase 3 AFFIRM study in fibromyalgia. The primary outcome measure for this study is a pain responder analysis, which basically means patients report a minimum of a 30% reduction in pain from their baseline after undergoing treatments for 12 weeks.
The drug is taken at night daily, and researchers are seeing that patients are seeing improvements in sleep.

So that's it for this week.  It turned out better than I expected despite my limitations. Tonmya and magnetic stimulation look promising and LDN is still being promulgated as the best treatment for FM.  Perhaps 2016 will reveal further treatments that actually work!  We shall have to wait and see.  I will tell you all I can find out.  Will you tell me about any YOU discover?  We must keep good news circulating.
Fondest wishes
