Hello
Two questions for you:-
1. Have you been knitting the little hats for innocent's bottles?  If so, the deadline for submitting them is drawing nigh!  Please get them to me or to your nearest AgeUK centre or shop as soon as possible. Here are some of the ones I have knitted.
2. Did you do anything for Fibromyalgia awareness last week?  The Horsham Group celebrated with a meal out. We generated some interest, especially among the staff.  We had a good time despite OUR awareness of fibro!

Two of us attended the Chrysalis Effect Wellbeing event at Nutfield.  A recoding of Heidi Sawyer's talk is available below.

Highly Sensitive People & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Heidi Sawyer
Live recording from a talk Heidi gave at Chrysalis Effect Wellbeing Gathering, 6th September 2013. Thank you Elaine and Rob for a fantastic evening.
Within highly sensitive people are a refined group - Intuitive Sensitive People. These people are especially sensitive to the energy of others, have health niggles different to the average person, yet have an extraordinary skill to 'see around corners' and a unique ability to heal. In this talk Heidi will define why chronic fatigue impactshighly sensitive people and how their intuitive skills can help release them from debilitating illness.

Sleep Deprivation and Memory Loss

It is no secret that a good night's sleep makes you feel better. Not only does sleep give your body time to rest and recharge, it may also be crucial to your brain's ability to learn and remember.
During sleep, while your body rests, your brain is busy processing information from the day and forming memories. If you are sleep deprived, you are at risk of developing a number of serious health problems, such as hypertension, obesity, and diabetes, and your ability to learn and retain new information may be impaired.

Coping With Excessive Sleepiness

With more and more of us getting less and less sleep, it’s tempting to reach for a Red Bull or an espresso when we feel sleepy at work. But consuming caffeine to combat sleepiness can lead to a vicious cycle.
The java jolt that helps you stay awake can take up to eight hours to wear off. Caffeine can also reduce your sleep time, alter the normal stages of sleep, and decrease the quality of your sleep.
How can you stay awake naturally? Try some of these 12 jitter-free tips to take the edge off sleepiness.

How Nerve Pain Feels

People with nerve pain feel it in different ways. For some, it's a stabbing pain in the middle of the night. For others, symptoms can include a chronic prickling, tingling, or burning they feel all day.  Uncontrolled nerve pain can be hard to bear. But with treatment, it can often be adequately controlled.

Here are 25 ways that stress can affect the body. The good news is that there is much you can do—exercise, meditation, and more—to reduce the impact of stress in your life.

Dear All
What a wonderful spate of real summer weather we have had, 'the warmest and sunniest for seven years'!  Sadly, it seems to be over and we are back to rain, though that is much needed by gardeners and farmers, not to mention reservoirs.  Though, there were no water shortage warnings this year as far as I know!
I am pleased to say that St. Bart's has given me a date, 20th Sept, for my consultation within the Ocular Oncology Dept, but as yet, no time. Meanwhile I continue to wait and it's business as usual.

Gaining Traction (Through Distraction): A Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Chronicle #12

With no proof whatsoever, I believe that many of us with debilitating chronic diseases are so focused on these diseases that other medical problems seem like annoying distractions. Get lost; I can’t be bothered with you. Healthy people have a troublesome symptom and they see a doctor. Drink this 2 hours before bed to sleep better (plus 5 tips for insomnia) by Mike Geary

I've noticed in my travels and with working with clients that a large majority of people in today's fast-paced stressful world are struggling at least part of the time with falling asleep at night.
Over the years, I've also struggled on occasion with insomnia because of the stress placed on me by running a large publishing business.  And I've researched and learned quite a few tips and tricks over the years to help fight insomnia and fall asleep faster.
Without diving into every single technique I've learned over the years, I'll just touch on a few really simple, but powerful tips, foods, drinks, etc that I think can help you to fall asleep easier and faster too!

Living with Pain: Sleep Quality, Depression, Pain and Disability

Felix Naughton and his colleagues conducted a study to examine the relationship between sleep quality, depression, pain severity, and disability.  Their results (reported in the journal Pain) showed that sleep quality did not directly affect disability, but rather that poor sleep quality tended to make people feel more depressed and tended to make their pain feel worse. These changes, in turn, increased disability. In a study involving people with fibromyalgia, Nancy Hamilton and her colleagues reported a complex set of  findings in which poor sleep had a cumulative effect on negative emotions and interfered with emotional recovery on days in which the person experienced a high number of stressful, negative events.
The results of such studies provide scientific verification for what you may know from your own experience: sleep plays a crucial role in the daily experience of people with chronic pain.

The Fibromyalgia Diet: HELP! I Don't Know What to Eat

Does that sound like you?
If so, you’re shouting in good company. The cacophony over what to eat (or more loudly, what not to eat) is practically deafening.
Any post, tweet, or article I write that mentions nutrition is likely to have multiple comments expressing frustration in this area … and for good reason. While the specifics of individual diets vary, it’s clear that what we eat has a great effect on how we feel. And, we are each different, with unique nutritional needs.

Fibromyalgia in Children and Teens

Usually it's easy to find out what's making kids sick. Common childhood conditions like strep throat and ear infections are pretty simple to diagnose with a throat swab or doctor's exam.
Yet when kids complain of vague symptoms, like fatigue, achiness, and difficulty sleeping, they could be experiencing any one of a number of common illnesses. One condition that's easy to overlook in children and teens is fibromyalgia, which causes pain in the muscles and soft tissues surrounding the joints.
Fibromyalgia can be hard to spot in children because it's much more common in adults.

But when you get “Stuck” in this mourning processes for an extended period of time it can become very debilitating emotionally and physically Because the mind and body are connected). Canadian Guidelines for Fibromyalgia Recognize the Need for Easier Path to Diagnosis and Management

Our friends from McGill University came out with a whole new plan for managing fibromyalgia recently in their 2012 Canadian Guidelines for Fibromyalgia. The content is nothing earth shattering or particularly new, really, they discuss the usual diagnostic issues and the typical treatment strategies, and they’re not even particularly succinct at fully 46 recommendations. So why are these guidelines so intriguing?

There is Hope, it’s Not All In Your Head

If you’ve had your life turned upside down and controlled by Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue, there must be underlying reasons, not just a collection of symptoms and a label. In fact, for most patients, multiple, hormonal deficiencies explain your symptoms. In addition, nutritional deficiencies contribute to the severity of your condition. Our experience, along with scientific clinical trials has demonstrated that only a comprehensive approach achieves substantial long term results.

Fibromyalgia: Are We Getting Anywhere?

Chances are good that someone in your family or your circle of friends has fibromyalgia.
Fibromyalgia affects 10 million Americans, which is 2 percent to 4 percent of the population. It has become the 21st Century Disease. Although the disorder has been around for thousands of years, a name was not designated for this miserable condition until 1976. Then in 1990, the American College of Rheumatology published a formal set of diagnostic criteria. Nevertheless, medical science still struggles to understand fibromyalgia and physicians continue to argue over whether or not it is a “real” disease.
The reason for all of this fibro-furor is its complexity. This report will provide you with a
summary of what is known to date about this disease, from what causes it to what can
be done about it.

The definitive guide to the herbs, vitamins, and nutrients your body really needs

Walk down the supplement aisle of any health food store, pharmacy, or major grocer and you’ll see hundreds—no, thousands—of pill bottles. Seven different kinds of vitamin C. Four folic acids (plus eight prenatals that contain it). An entire shelf of omega-3s—with some marked “super plus.” Plus what, exactly?
If you’re (understandably) confused about what you actually need, we’ve got you covered with our list of the 100 best supplements for women. We enlisted the help of Prevention advisory board member Ashley Koff, RD, to create this one-stop resource for women of all ages. Click through all 100 to see what brands we love, along with any precautions you should consider before taking them. Plus, key tips on scoring the same nutrients in these pills from food—and why you should be getting enough of these ingredients in the first place.

N.B. I would like to point out to you that the information in my eNews blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.  Links are given to the original articles. I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only. They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will. Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia yndrome
and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.
