FMS eNews 05/01/13

Hi Everyone
Here comes the first eNews for 2013.  I just loved the creativity in this artwork.

I never cease to be amazed at the quantity of information and advice being offered on the web for fibro sufferers and their carers.  I try to get a good cross section pulling in what appears to be most relevant each week.
I have discovered extra facilities offered by Blogger; like putting the logo outside the blog area and a search bar, both of which automatically operate on all blogs.  Please try thre search bar to see if it worls for you.  I have also discovered the stats (statistics) of the blog which tells me how many people view it!  It looks like only about half of those who get my alert message actually do.  However, judging by the kind messages of appreciation I have been receiving, those who do view it find it useful and beneficial.

Why Fibromyalgia is a Balancing Act

by Kristin Thorson, Editor, Fibromyalgia Network ,
Posted: December 26, 2012

You may feel more steady on your feet with fibromyalgia one day, while your movement can be way off-balance the next day. When clumsiness strikes, your legs start clipping the edges of furniture and your shoulders knock against the walls. It’s like being in a pinball machine, except you don’t get any bonus points for the extra bruises!

Planning & Organization - Take Back Control of Your Life!

Fibromyalgia (FMS) and chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) can change every aspect of your life. You may not have the energy to do laundry; you may have too much pain to walk through a grocery store or scrub a bathtub; and when brain fog is bad, you're likely to forget what it was you were supposed to be doing anyway.

Setting Goals for the New Year With Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Are you contemplating New Year's resolutions, or maybe just hoping to make 2013 better than 2012?
Setting goals is easy - it's attaining them that's hard. When you have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, it can seem impossible.
The specific challenges we face with these illnesses include low energy, fatigue and forgetfulness (brain fog). Some of us have symptoms all the time, which makes it hard to do anything, ever. Others of us have roller coaster symptoms, with brief periods of productivity followed by a crash and doing absolutely nothing. Throw a lifestyle change into the mix ... it's not going to be easy.

Improving Your Memory with Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Brain fog/fibro fog can really do a number on your memory. Beyond being frustrating and embarrassing, a poor memory can make it hard to do your job or even function on a basic level, depending on how bad it is.

When you have a chronic illness like fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome, you've got enough working against you - you don't need to make things worse for yourself!

10 Studies on How Vitamin E Saves Your Life from the Inside Out

Most people have heard of vitamin E, and you probably also know that it acts as a powerful antioxidant in your body, helping to ward off free radical damage. What you may not know, however, is just how far-reaching this vitamin’s effect on your health may be … and that there’s a good chance you are not getting enough -- or the right kinds -- from dietary sources alone.

Fibromyalgia Treatment Centre
If you have fibromyalgia you are ill.  You are NOT crazy.

"You may have been told that whatever you have is untreatable or that your symptoms are all in your head. People think you're a hypochondriac and doctors may not want to handle your case. Or you may have been overmedicated by well-intentioned health care providers who wanted desperately to help you. You may be having trouble getting refills for medications that make your life tolerable. You may be in danger of losing your job and your relationships. You may have fallen victim to those who are making billions of dollars a year off those desperately searching for something, anything, that will help..."

LOVE LETTER TO NORMALS
 by Claudia Marek

Here is my letter written to explain to family and friends what it's like to have fibromyalgia. It won't work miracles: it's hard to understand our illness from the outside looking in.  But it is a start and can open the door to important dialogues. You are all welcome to use it, either as is, or as a basis for writing your own.  Remember that you have a responsibility to tell those close to you what is wrong and communicate as clearly as you can how you feel and what you need.  The best time to do that is when you are not upset!

I hope the new year got off to a good start for you.  We took our family to see a show at Brighton but it was so loud I had to keep my fingers in my ears most of the time.  Flashing lights were so disturbing that my eyes had to be shut too.  I did not realise how light and sound sensitive I had become.  It was most disappointing.  Other than that it was a good show!
Don't forget that you are welcome to add comments at the end of each blogpost.
Bye for now

N.B.   I would like to point out to you that the information in my eNews  blog is passed on to you mainly from other sources.   Links are given to the original articles.   I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership.  Sites I refer you to are  for information only.  They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will.  Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life.  Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations.    Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.

A Happy New Year to You All
I hope you had a very happy and peaceful Christmas.   I have been wanting to create a suitable logo for this blog.  When I did the Christmas one with the symbolic star and holly it inspired me to use the star with lettering.  Stella is the Latin word for 'star'. The Virgin Mary was formerly given the byname 'Stella Maris', meaning 'star of the sea'.  My name is Stella Mary!   So now we have a logo.  Suggestions are always welcome for improvement.
I wasn’t sure whether I would be able to produce an eNews this week, but I have gathered a number of things together, so here goes:-

Multivitamins: So Many Types, So Many Labels
By MELINDA BECK

Your mother made you take them. Many doctors agree. Even the Flintstones seem to endorse them. But do you really need a multivitamin?
How do you know if you need a multivitamin? And how do you choose which one? Melinda Beck explains.
The answer is ... probably not, although much depends on your age, gender, diet and health. One thing is certain: A one-size-fits-all multivitamin can't precisely meet everyone's needs. People over 50 need extra vitamin B-12, but not as much iron as many multivitamins contain. Children who take adult multivitamins may be getting too much vitamin A. And many women need a separate supplement to get extra calcium, since it's too bulky to fit into a multivitamin.

FibroMadness

Fibromyalgia causes millions of people all over the world to suffer, and while there is finally new research into this disease, many questions remain unanswered. For instance fibromyalgia was labeled as fibrositis, (First labeled by Gowers in 1904), and later rheumatism, etc, until the American College of Rheumatology agreed in 1990 to diagnostic criteria, (11 or more specific tender points throughout body.)

What causes fibromyalgia? The history of fibromyalgia is  very old has only recently received the attention needed to find the cause.

Drug Induced Nutritional Deficiencies and Gluten Sensitivity

Many Medications Rob Your Already Malnourished Body of Nutrients
Drug induced nutrient loss is a common yet often ignored side effect of prescription medications. Often times, gluten sensitive patients who are chronically ill, are prescribed medicines for their symptoms. Unfortunately, their physicians never sit down with them to explain this problem.
