Pacing & Planning: Essential Survival Skills

I'm going through a particularly tough recovery period after failing to pace myself and having two really busy weeks, so my mind is stuck on what I should have done.
This is the worst time of year for over-doing-it, so let's look at some ways to keep from crashing. Or, at least, to keep from crashing really hard.
Below, you'll find articles on every-day pacing and planning as well as some on how to deal with the holidays. Even if you don't follow all of the advice, you might be able to pick out a few things that can help you keep going, as much as possible, until January.
 Take care of yourself!

Sootheze Toasty Collars – A warm hug from a pet

My husband saw this little critter hanging out in our living room and his comment was “I like that cat better than the other two.”  If you are like me and you love cats you might like this one better too. Unlike my other two fickle felines that only want to give me attention when they want something this one will give me a warm (or cold) hug whenever I need it.
This little guy is one of the many Sootheze Toasty Collars that can be used as a hot/cold pack around your neck and shoulders. I enjoy mine as a warm collar mostly.
The great thing about these guys is that they have seams in all the right places so that the filling is distributed evenly. . . .

6 things that I had to give up in order to move forward

It was just about six years ago that I “got sick” and started feeling my life and my plans slipping through my fingers. I want to share these six things that I had to give up in order to move forward, in hopes that they can help you move forward as well.

High pressure oxygen can effectively treat fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a disease that is still shrouded in a lot of mystery in the medical community. For sufferers, the constant aches and pains are extremely difficult to deal with. Muscle pain, light sensitivity, and difficulty focusing are all symptoms that fibromyalgia patients express to their doctors.
Until recently, there have not been many studies that have gone in depth to understand fibromyalgia. This has frustrated many people who have long days (and even longer nights) due to the pain. Sure, there are a few ways doctors have tried to treat the pain, but sometimes those don’t work. Pain medications and drugs like Lyrica only work for a few lucky people who find some relief.
Finally, one group of scientists and doctors is trying to find a new way to help… and even heal fibromyalgia pain. Their way? With high pressure oxygen therapy.

Promises To Keep: NIH Commits to Reinvigorating Effort on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

The news had been rumored for months - something big was happening at the NIH. The NIH indeed finally moved on ME/CFS in a big way but exactly how was unclear. Were we indeed in NINDS? Can we expect a major grant announcement (RFA)? What are the next steps?
It took some time but I got some answers. Put up your feet and check out a long blog on the NIH and ME/CFS. What we got. What we didn't get and what (hopefully) we can expect in the future.

IBS: why do I have it and how can I control my symptoms?

‘My GP told me I have IBS, is this a serious disease?’ This question is asked over and over again by individuals experiencing digestive problems such as bloating, cramping and inconsistent bowel movements. There are, fortunately, a lot of nutrition tips available on how to control IBS.
So before we dive into the many factors on how to control IBS, let’s grasp an understanding of what this ‘syndrome’ actually is. Irritable bowel syndrome, often referred to as IBS, is not actually a disease. IBS is simply a term used to describe a collection of digestive symptoms present without a diagnosed disease. In essence, IBS can be considered to be a symptomatic mystery with various possible causes. If you have diarrhoea, cramping or blood in your stools, your GP will most likely refer you to a gastroenterologist who can check your gut lining using endoscopy (a camera on a long flexible tube) to look for abnormal growths, inflammation and ulcers; they may also run tests for conditions such as coeliac disease and H.Pylori bacterial infection. If all results prove negative, then you will most likely be diagnosed with IBS – no obvious state of disease, although digestive symptoms present.

Misleading PACE claims should be retracted - Campaign created by ME Action
To:  THE LANCET, PSYCHOLOGICAL MEDICINE, AND THE AUTHORS OF THE PACE TRIAL

Given the weak and flawed methodologies of the PACE trial, which claims that CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and GET (graded exercise) led to the recovery of ME/CFS patients, we, the undersigned patients, doctors, scientists, parents, children, family, friends, caretakers and #MEAllies:
– call upon The Lancet to retract the claim made in its February 2011 editorial [1] that 30% of patients, or indeed any patients at all, were said to have recovered in the accompanying Lancet paper on the PACE trial [2]; and retract from that paper all analyses and statements in relation to the absurd “normal ranges” for fatigue and physical function;
http://www.meaction.net/whats-wrong-in-the-lancet
– call upon Psychological Medicine to retract the claims in this paper . . . .
– call upon the study authors to publish the recovery outcomes according to the analyses specified in the trial’s protocol
– call upon all parties to reject the view that being as disabled as patients with congestive heart failure is a good recovery of physical function in CFS.

Fibromyalgia and Cognitive Problems

Managing Cognitive Fatigue
Pain is generally considered the primary symptom of fibromyalgia, but I feel there is another one equal to, if not worse than, pain. That symptom is fatigue.
Now I know everyone has different levels of pain, fatigue, and all the other symptoms, so this may vary from person to person. But the thing about pain is that to a certain extent you can push through it and still get things done. There are pain medicines that can help get rid of, or at least curb, the amount of pain that we feel.
There are topical ointments and lotions that help with pain. Heat and/or cold can help with pain.
But what helps fatigue?  Find out!

The Brain Boosting and Fatigue Fighting B-12: Hydroxocobalamin

Hydroxocobalamin (hi-DROX-oh-koe-BAHL-a-min) is a natural and uniquely powerful form of vitamin B-12. Clinical studies and practice have shown it can help to improve cognitive functioning, fight fatigue, promote heart health, and more.
Vitamin B-12 is an essential nutrient needed to make red blood cells that carry oxygen throughout the body, the myelin sheath that surrounds nerve cells, and various proteins. It also plays a role in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Yet, despite its importance to overall health, vitamin B-12 deficiency is relatively common. It is estimated that up to 15% of the general population may be deficient in B-12 - and more among those with chronic illnesses. . . .
Hydroxocobalamin's Relationship to Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
Many of the symptoms fibromyalgia and ME/CFS patients report are also symptoms of a B-12 deficiency - cognitive functioning problems, memory loss, and fatigue to name a few. Is that merely a coincidence or is there a connection?
In a 1997 study of 12 patients with fibromyalgia and ME/CFS: Most had little or no detectable B-12 in their cerebrospinal fluid - despite the fact that all had normal B-12 blood levels. Conversely, they had high levels of homocysteine in their cerebrospinal fluid.

I have been amazed at the interest the innocents drinks' Facebook page (scroll down to November 4th) has aroused.  My moment of fame!!!  Almost 43,000 likes to date and must be hundreds of comments. Wish fibromyalgia could get as much attention!

There was a little opposition suggesting that hats should be made for prem babies, not bottles!  So I'm going to do some of those as well from now on.  Having had 3 prem babies myself I can see the need.  There are so many good causes one can work for.  Sometimes it's good not to focus on fibro!!

Fondest wishes to you all

Study Shows Stress Increases Pain in Fibromyalgia

“Stress exacerbates pain in the everyday lives of women with fibromyalgia syndrome” – This title for a recent study has a serious “duh” factor attached to it.
I think anyone who lives with Fibromyalgia or near a woman (or man) with Fibromyalgia could tell you that stress increases pain in Fibromyalgia. It’s certainly true for me. Surely, this study by Fischer et al. has to tell us something we don’t know, so let’s take a look.

Chronic Illness Inspires

Sharing is Caring! Originally posted on Prohealth
Often chronic illness seems to zap us of our inspiration, but that’s not always the case. Many of us discover new passions and hobbies after we are diagnosed with chronic illness.
Sometimes, chronic illness inspires. While our illness may have taken one hobby we loved away we find ourselves engaged in new hobbies, and in new ways of being inspired. For some of us it is photography or art, for others it is gardening, knitting, or even writing.
[For me it's knitting and creating this blog!]

Characterized by redness, swelling, and pain, inflammation is the body's autoimmune response to harmful or threatening stimuli. Inflammation is likely to occur when the body comes into contact with toxins, allergens, and microorganisms, many of which are a normal part of everyday life; as a result, most people experience mild inflammation from time to time. When inflammation becomes more frequent than normal, the body is at risk for chronic inflammation which may result in tissue damage. To reduce the risk of tissue damage, experts recommend that sufferers of chronic inflammation seek medical care or advice. While prescription medications are commonly used for inflammatory conditions, a number of options exist for those who prefer natural treatments. Alternative and complimentary treatments include dietary and lifestyle changes, homeopathic remedies, herbs and supplements. Studies have shown that certain herbs--such as those described below-- may help to treat a range of inflammatory disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis. Here, then, in no particular order is our list of herbs considered beneficial for inflammation: - See more at: http://www.herbs-info.com/anti-inflammatory-herbs.html
