National Fibromyalgia Awareness Week begins this weekend.  I hope you are doing something to raise awareness.  I have learnt of a third group's activity.
Fibromyalgia in Tonbridge Support Group for West Kent are raising awareness with a stall in the foyer of ASDA - Kings Hill, on Saturday 6th September (today),  10am – 4pm.  I wish them well.

Email Scam - "Terrible Situation"

Last weekend Jeanne Hambleton's computer was hacked.  A message was sent to all her contacts (from a false email address) asking for financial assistance because she had been mugged in Kiev, Ukraine whilst on holiday.  Of course it was a scam and might have been ingnored, but in the process her contacts list was wiped clean so she has lost all her email addresses.  If you are in the habit of receiving messages from her, about FMSSES, FibCon, FollyPogs, or in any other capacity, then please email her so she can rebuild her database.  Otherwise she will not be able to contact you again. Thank you for your co-operation in this matter.  Please send your email messages to chair@fms-sas.co.uk

From Adrienne Dellwo, your Guide to Fibromyalgia & Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

We've all been there - one moment your brain is clear and working just fine, and then the fog rolls in and you struggle to do the simplest things. Could it all be due to messed up blood-flow patterns? Maybe. See the latest research, below.
Also this week, a look at some of the bad advice we get and how you can respond to it. Down in Featured Articles, I'm going to be obnoxious just like the stores and dive into the holidays! I've got a better reason than they do, though - I want you to get a jump on it so you aren't wiped out before the Black Friday sales even begin.
A quick note: The format change I've been talking about is now a reality for this page. Things will look different to you, but it's still the same site.
Take care of yourself!

System Reset: New Way To Reduce Fight or Flight Response Found

We just saw that some Japanese ME/CFS researchers believe they may have developed an objective test to measure post-exertional fatigue.  Heart rate variability tests indicated that fatigue after a cognitive test is associated with reduced parasympathetic nervous system (PNS or ‘rest and digest’ system) functioning and increased sympathetic nervous system (SNS or ‘fight or flight’ system) functioning.

“A Sweet Retreat”: Meditating While Having Chronic Fatigue Syndrome – A Meditator Returns

I learned to meditate in 2007 and developed CFS in 2011. In the three years in between, I participated in some 20 retreats of 2 to 14 days in length. Yes, meditation is addictive (in the best way possible). Yet since I became sick, I’ve mostly discarded meditation as just one more activity that requires more mental resources than I have available.
Research indicates meditation and mindfulness exercises have real health benefits and they can turn down the flight/fight response that appears activated in ME/CF and FM
I recently rediscovered meditation, though, and am excited to share with you the palpable and scientifically validated benefits of meditation, from improved concentration, better emotional health and reduced pain sensitivity to increased energy and more

Fatigue Explained? Japanese Assert Brain Damage Causes Fatigue in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
A Central Nervous System Hypothesis of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome
“… neurophysiological and neuroimaging studies in combination with subjective or a newly developed objective evaluation method of chronic fatigue have begun to clarify the  mechanisms underlying chronic cognitive fatigue …”

Deciding that ‘chronic  fatigue’ had become not just an illness problem but a productivity concern for their economy, the Japanese initiated a program a couple of decades ago to understand and treat it. They note that a third of the Japanese population complains of  “chronic fatigue” and that “chronic  fatigue” contributes to cardiovascular conditions,  epilepsy, and early death.  Their program has encompassed all levels of fatigue from chronic fatigue to chronic fatigue syndrome. We’ve missed out on a lot of their work focused on fatigue because it doesn’t show up in searches for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).

Do Gut Bacteria Rule our Minds?

In an ecosystem within us, microbes evolved to sway food choices, leading to preferences, cravings, and, possibly, obesity.
In an article published this week in the journal BioEssays, researchers from UC San Francisco, Arizona State University and University of New Mexico concluded from a review of the recent scientific literature that microbes influence human eating behavior and dietary choices to favor consumption of the particular nutrients they grow best on, rather than simply passively living off whatever nutrients we choose to send their way.

Attacking Fibromyalgia Pain with Vitamin D

You wouldn’t think one of the richest countries in the world would need to worry much about nutritional deficiencies, but the truth might surprise you. Many Americans suffer from some form of nutritional deficiency – such as iron or magnesium deficiency (both of which share many of the same symptoms as fibromyalgia). Among the various nutritional deficiencies plaguing Americans, there is one in particular that has seen a startling increase in recent years – vitamin D deficiency.

Press Release
Elevated Suicide Risk in People with Fibromyalgia
Published on Friday, 05 September 2014

Fibromyalgia is known as a condition that is not life threatening but the suicide potential is not considered.
How many lives have to be taken?  How many families destroyed before the necessary attention is paid to this life-changing condition?
In the UK, information about how many people with fibromyalgia have been diagnosed is not collected and a recent question by an MP about how many were receiving benefits was deemed too expensive to collate.

Whole-body vibration may reduce pain associated with fibromyalgia

Whole-body vibration exercise effectively reduced the severity of pain in patients with fibromyalgia, according to study findings.
“Our findings are promising, but it is not entirely clear whether these improvements were the result of added vibration or just the effects of being more active,” study author Anthony S. Kaleth, PhD, associate professor at the School of Physical Education and Tourism Management, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, said in a press release from the American College of Sports Medicine annual meeting.

Cultivate an Open Heart
"This can make a real difference in our lives."

I believe that every human being has an innate desire for happiness and does not want to suffer. I believe that each of us has the same potential to develop inner peace and thereby achieve happiness and joy. If one has a positive mental attitude then, even when surrounded by hostility, one will not lack inner peace. On the other hand, if one’s mental attitude is more negative, influenced by fear, suspicion, helplessness, or self-loathing, then, even when surrounded by one’s best friends, in a nice atmosphere and comfortable surroundings, one will not be happy.

A personal  note from Vicky

The Norfolk coastline taken by my husband on bank holiday weekend.  He is a talented photographer and I think the use of black and white is most effective.
There have been some highs and lows over the past week or so.  We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to North Norfolk to stay with family over the bank holiday weekend but were not so keen on the five hour journey back in torrential rain!
We had to say to a much loved pet last Thursday - Dodger.  He had got very thin and weak but was purring until the end.  17 is a good innings for a cat I'm told and we still have his brother who is in fine form and I'm getting lots of cuddles.
Wednesday saw me in Southampton meeting up with my ex room mate from my nurse training days and another of our housemates from our days in Oxford.  Felix now lives in the States but is working as a nurse on the cruise liner the Ruby Princess which hit port that day.  The years just fell away :-)

The ‘Insulted Midbrain’ in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Recently Dr. Lucinda Bateman proposed that neuroinflammation in the middle part of the brain could explain many, if not all, of the symptoms found in Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. With that intriguing hypothesis in mind we take a look back at a fascinating MRI study by Dr. Leighton Barnden of the Department of Nuclear Medicine, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide, that came to a similar conclusion two years ago.

From Mono To Giardia To Orthostatic Intolerance to … Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Dr. Cheney: the First Visit

My ME/CFS History
1989 – The First Flu-like Illness
I was always a high energy burn the candle at both ends type-A person. In my early twenties (1989) I came down with a flu-like illness that did not go away. I had gone from a person who would play sports 4-6 hours a day, to one who would get worn out walking around the block. The doctors said I had mono or Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV), but the condition did not resolve.

The Cheney Chronicles #2: His Protocol For Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

I have a confession to make -  I am treating myself.
I just finished listening/reading Dr. Horowitz’s book, “Why Can’t I Get Better? Solving the Mystery of Lyme and Chronic Disease” in which he discusses MSIDS – Multiple Systemic Infectious Disease Syndrome.  I learned from that book that we all deserve a doctor that tries to diagnose our health problems and who wants to reduce his patients suffering.  I learned some various other things from his book that could also be useful, especially if you suspect you have Lyme disease.
My current host of doctors include Dr. Rey, who is a member of Dr. Klimas’ clinic at Nova Southeastern University, and Dr. Paul Cheney. I feel they are very narrowly focused. Therefore, I am trying to treat myself making use of each of their different perspectives in the hopes that the combination of treatments will prove to be the catalyst that reduces and preferably eliminates my relentless fatigue.

How many marbles do YOU have?
An easy fun way for children to understand the physical limitations of someone with CFIDS and Fibromyalgia using marbles and a jar.

I have written a children's book to help them understand the physical limitations of someone with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia.. I've written a fun story but give a practical fun analogy that anyone can use.   The cool thing is the analogy would work well for other chronic illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, pulomary disease and other physically limiting conditions.  I plan on using Xlibris which is listed as one of the top 10 self publishing companies.. I have a contract ready and waiting and all I need are the funds to proceed with the publishing.. The publishing package includes illustration, marketing, registering the book with the federal government, obtaining a Unique Identifier number.  This book is necessary and will help children and families with CFS and Fibromyalgia.  I have already had friends who have CFS and or Fibro read it to their children and many of them have already assembled the jar and marbles.  It's so much fun for the kids and the adults..

It wasn't meant to be!

For those who haven't  seen me in the past week you'll know that I was unsuccessful in my bid to take part in the next series of 'The Island'.  Many of you thought I was crazy to even contemplate it and maybe I was.  It was though an interesting experience to go through the selection for a reality TV show.  Lots of us there, were interested in seeing how far we could push ourselves but of course the television company had  another agenda.  They want a diverse range of people, the more extreme the better judging from the people from my group that went through to the next round. I enjoyed the last series and will certainly watch the next series with extra interest.
