Successfully Tackling Fibromyalgia since 2000, by Norah Wickerson

Norah Wickerson
I was a sufferer of Fibromyalgia myself for over twenty years before I developed my Combination Approach in 2000, which helped me to attain better health than I had ever known.
Since then I have been having some great success treating other patients with Fibromyalgia using my Combination Approach - check out the testimonials for a selection of patients' comments.
I am based in Derby, Derbyshire, in the UK Midlands, but I treat patients from all over the UK and beyond.
I also treat patients with Fibromyalgia and related conditions at the Derby Nuffield Hospital.
I believe that Fibromyalgia is a collection of symptoms indicating that the body systems are out of balance.

12 Ways We Sabotage Our Mental Health - Our own worst enemy By Amanda Gardner

Our mind and mood are keenly sensitive to the world around us. Distressing life events—a bad breakup, unemployment, the death of a loved one—often leave us rattled or sad, of course, but our daily routine and patterns of thinking also have a big impact on our mood. Bad habits like skimping on sleep, drinking too much, or nursing grudges can undermine our mental health, whether that means a brief episode of the blues or full-blown depression and anxiety.

Chronic Pain Management: Rebuild Friendships

You may have noticed that pain puts a strain on friendship.  Whether you have fibromyalgia, headaches, back pain, arthritis, or other type of chronic pain,  chronic pain can take a toll on your relationships, especially with friends. You may see friends less or  feel disconnected when you do get together. You may have lost touch with some friends who you feel are too active – you may believe you just can’t keep up.  You may feel that some of your friends just don’t understand what you are experiencing and that some are even downright insensitive. Chronic pain can be lonely. But, you need not give up on friendship! As a first step, it is important to realize that while it is not possible to change other people, you are in charge your own behavior. Start by thinking of what you can do to begin the process of rebuilding your relationships. Here are some ways to improve and repair friendships that may have been negatively impacted by your chronic pain.

5 Common Pain and Pain Relief Myths

What you don't know about pain and pain relief can hurt you. Great strides have been made in the understanding of pain and its treatment in the last decade. Pain that was once considered hopeless is now manageable.
Medical evidence proves that many of the beliefs about pain and pain relief are false. Here's what experts say you should know about five of the most common pain relief myths:

Movement therapy has been proven time and time again to help my (Dr D’s) patients get immediate relief from their chronic pain of Fibromyalgia.
Movement therapy is unique. These movements are simple and stress-less that any person of any age in any condition can do, without any of the side effects that come with traditional exercise like soreness, cramping, stiffness or muscle spasms which can often last for days afterward.

I take no responsibility for their accuracy but freely give them publicity if I think they might be of interest to my readership. Sites I refer you to are for information only.  They might conflict in their opinions, they might not even be medically sound, but I merely offer them for you to peruse and make your own judgements, accept or reject as you will.  Only by reading widely can we get an overall picture of fibromyalgia syndrome and how we can deal with its symptoms, learn to cope with them and still have a life. Any advice or recommendation of a medical or legal nature should always be discussed with a qualified professional.
I also include various awareness items, benefits issues, as well as general health considerations. Anyone wishing to reproduce any of the included items in printed form should seek permission from the originators.

FMS eNews 18/05/13

Hi there
This week I bought a new laptop computer as the one I have been using is being reclaimed by FMSSAS.  It’s Windows 8 – you can’t get any other kind now – and it’s all totally foreign to me!  It’s a completely different system and it’s going to be a great new learning curve for me.  I haven’t changed over to working on it yet, and I think that will take some time.    Whatever else I do, I am going to have to find a way to produce this blog on it!

Fibromyalgia Awareness: 7 Ways to Invoke the Fibro Warrior Spirit

Bayeux Tapestry
The efforts of Fibromyalgia Awareness Day shouldn’t be relegated to May 12th. Instead, they should infuse the whole calendar with the Fibro Warrior Spirit.
So short of storming the castle and scribbling all over accessible calendars, how do you infuse that Fibro Warrior Spirit into the days beyond May 12th?
Find out how!

A New Type of Treatment

TVAM (Transvascular Autonomic Modulation) is unique in that it goes beyond treatment of the symptoms, affecting the CNS (central nervous system) directly through manipulation of the autonomic nerve fibers that travel along the jugular vein, improving overall autonomic function.
Patients with Fibromyalgia also suffer from autonomic dysfunction, or dysautonomia. Symptoms of autonomic dysfunction include fatigue, sleep disturbances, altered cognitive function (brain fog), thermal intolerance, headaches, and bladder or bowel dysfunction. An ongoing scientific study conducted at Synergy Health with a growing pool of patients with autonomic dysfunction (over 600), has shown definitive results in favor of TVAM

The Role of Magnesium in Fibromyalgia - An investigatory paper by Mark London

“This web page was the result of my research regarding magnesium, and why it's important not only for the average person, but especially for people with fibromyalgia.  If you aren't interested in reading lots of studies, and are already convinced of magnesium's importance, then just click here to get to my recommendations.  Please note, magnesium is only one of many possible treatments that can help fibromyalgia.  It, by itself, cannot effectively treat it.”

Message from Dr Kevin White

Dr Kevin White
“For your information, in the ESCAPE mnemonic, the C stands for "Consider FM a systemic disease" and the P stands for "Pinpoint the right diagnosis" (which means, identify sources of pain beyond fibro, like tendonitis or undiagnosed inflammatory arthritis, that are also contributing to the pain.)
Thanks for steering people towards my website.”
SO, the correct interpretation is
            Educate yourself
Surround yourself by the right people
            Consider FM a systemic disease
Accept responsibility for your own health
            Pinpoint the right diagnosis
Educate your doctor and Enjoy good times
Thanks to Kevin for that correction.  His website is  http://www.thefibrofog.com/  and his blog is  http://thefibrofog.blogspot.com.

Interventions in Pediatric Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis: A Systematic Review.
A range of interventions have been used for the management of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME) in children and adolescents. Currently, debate exists as to the effectiveness of these different management strategies. The objective of this review was to synthesize and critically appraise the literature on interventions for pediatric CFS/ME.

Living With Pain: Two Types of Coping
Chronic Pain is a Form of Chronic Stress.

Living with pain presents all kinds of challenges in addition to the pain itself. You may find work difficult or impossible. Your social life may have been greatly reduced. Your roles as partner, parent, friend may have changed in ways that are deeply disappointing to you. The activities of daily living may have become difficult. You may find yourself trying many different ways of coping with pain. As described by Jochen Brandtstadter, coping efforts can be categorized as assimilative or accomodative. Effective chronic pain management may require knowing when to use each type of coping.
